tinfoil?

I hear everyone diss tinfoil saying it creates hot spots but it is a reflective material and I heard if you use the duller less shiny side it won't create hotspots. Is it better to have tinfoil for reflection than to not have anything at all?

only on your head, buy space blankets they work better and wont cause burn spots.

Apparently you have read enough times not to use aluminum foil, but by asking the question yourself you might get a different answer...

Flat white paint works very well and you can get cheap flat white wall paint for like 15 bucks a gallon.

dude...been there, done it. You are not accomplishing anything, but harm and later side affects. If you are in a tent, you don't need anything extra. If you are in a room, it should be light in color and leak proof on light. Snap a picture. Respect

Rep to birddog. Been there done that. Stuff is cheap rips like hell. Breaks up light. Flat white paint 99% reflective be good option

If you had a good light to begin with, worrying about the reflectiveness of tin foil would be like worrying about whether a decal will make an F40 go fast or not...

I know I'm looking into buying some mylar, but should I leave up my tinfoil or take it down until I get the mylar?

it's not going to hurt anything with a few cfl's in there, but, flat white paint, panda cloth, styrafoam insulation and mylar all work better. panda cloth is pretty cheep btw.

space blanket are a great cheap option. i go to the dollar tree and buy the car windshield sun reflectors for $1 a piece they are a little more durable and are 2ft x 4 ft each. easy to staple up or glue to some posterboard or something if you want to make a folding stand for a single plant

I never had any problems with tinfoil
using it on seedlings now
just got my tent though so I will be phasing it out.
I wouldn't worry about it.

The beginners stage and tinfoil walls sure brings back some memories and I love it . It has been said that it will create hot spots but through out all my years I never saw a consequence of this even with HID lamps . It was all I could do at times as painting is not always feasible in every situation . The foil was more of a pain in the ass though as a little rough treatment gave way to some sad looking foil walls and curtains but it sufficed and did what it was intended to do regardless .

I also collected chip bags and assembled them into mylar sheets once , but the oil and grease never fully came off and the film remained lol . As mentioned car windshield reflectors and space blankets are cheap alternatives to foil and its trouble . But if it is all you have it will be better than nothing at all .

We pinned up white plastic garbage bags. I have no idea if that was a good idea or not to be honest. Its almost as cheap as tinfoil tho lol.
