timers/surge protectors

got a few more noob questions real quick for you guys- gotta make sure I'm safe before I plug anything into the wall!
1. Should everything I use be plugged into a surge protector? I'm probably going to be plugging my light into a different circuit than the rest of my stuff, so should I have that lonely plug in a surge protector?
2. Should I plug surge protectors into the wall and then plug timers into the surge protector, or should I plug timers into the wall and then plug surge protectors into timers?
3. I have a digital timer- titan controls apollo 7, it says on the back "not for use with digital ballasts," so do I pretty much have a useless timer right here?
4. would you recommend that I don't use older/used surge protectors or will that not be a problem?
5. I'm going to be using a kill a watt meter, as with question #2, should I go wall>wattage meter>timer>surge protector? or wall>wattage meter>surge protector>timer? or should I just not do this for any reason?
Thanks!

You don't really need surge protectors. All the stuff you listed does not have delicate enough circuits (like a TV or computer) to warrant their use. If you get a spike large enough to hurt them the breaker will blow first.

Don't know about that timer and digi ballasts. Don't see why it would make a diff...it's just a relay switch.

Your watt meter...obvious-fucking-Lee. Goes upstream of the thing you want to monitor.
