How Legalizing Marijuana On Indian Reservations Could End Pot Prohibition

This week, the Department of Justice announced that it would let Native American tribes grow or sell marijuana on their reservations, even in states where the drug is still illegal. The decision opens the door to pockets of legal marijuana throughout the country, in addition to the growing number of states that have legalized pot or are considering doing so.

There are more than 300 reservations in some 30 states. (Here's a map.) If a good portion of those tribal governments choose to grow and sell marijuana on their land, then large swaths of the country will have access to legal pot.

It becomes harder and harder for the federal government to list marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug -- considered the most addictive and dangerous and as bad as heroin -- if millions of Americans can buy it at the local pot shop or drive to a nearby reservation for their weed.

In some parts of the country it could be easier to legally buy pot than get an abortion. (Oklahoma and North Dakota, for example.)

Of course, the DOJ's announcement is logical. The feds have already indicated they'll respect state decisions to legalize recreational marijuana use and sales as long as they follow eight guidelines, including preventing distribution to minors or ensuring revenue from sales does not go to gangs or cartels. Indian lands are sovereign nations and should get equal or more deferential treatment than the states.

Still, it will be interesting to watch how the cultural and legal shift on marijuana continues to unfold, and how the federal government responds.

Saying Native Americans cannot grow marijuana on their property is as fucking absurd as regulating when and where they hunt and fish.
Remember, they were the first ones to call our government out for their bullshit ways.
It just took longer than they predicted for our government to turn on it's own.

Yeah its freaken cool and its the Department of Justice that gave their OK.

I still believe Obama is the best thing to happen to marijuana since I've been around. Yeah he has his faults for sure yet when it comes to weed, he is unlike the rest.

If only Obama could have been the president right after Ford or Carter. The 1970's were awesome, we really thought weed was going to become legal back then. Cops were cooler back then as well, it was unheard of to think of DUI and smoking weed in the cars. If an odor was noticed, everybody had to get out and if nothing was found in the car, the issue was over with the few times it happen to us.

Oh well, can't change the past

Northern California Tribe Plans Marijuana Farm

Santa Rosa AP - A tribe in Mendocino County plans to be the first tribe in the state to grow and distribute a large amount of medical marijuana. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported the announcement late last week by the 250-member Pinoleville Pomo Nation. The deal authorizes a Colorado-based investor, United Cannabis, and Kansas-based FoxBarry Farms to grow and distribute products from thousands of marijuana...

I saw a tribe (I can't remember the details right now) that were growing hemp and the dea would come in and inventory it, tear it up, and give some compensation. Whats wrong with a free market? It's been said before that if they were really fighting cannabis, that they would be wise to allow all those industrial pollinators loose.
