Thermal Imaging

Ok Im wondering if anyone knows how thermal imaging works? I mean can the heat be picked up on other sides of walls or roofs?

It works on the micrometer wavelengths of the EM spectrum.

Most materials allow these waves to pass through them, at least partially. Like walls and roofs.

So If Im running 1000 - 4000 watts in a garage and I have all the tech stuff to keep temps down nicely and everything is insulated do I need to worry about thermal imaging?

I'd suggest silver or gold reflectors. They block(reflect) IR by over 99%.

Technically thermal searches are unconstitutional.

It's usually a microscopically thin layer applied on aluminum(95% IR reflective). But they are much more expensive.

yeha i believe its illegal for DEA to randomly search with thermal imaging, they can only do it if someone snitches on you, and then i think they look for heat exiting through a vent, so if your heat vent it a lot hotter then the rest of your area might be an indication

How sure are you that they cant randomly search like that??
helicopters/ police staff and fuel costs dont warrant the usage of helicopters just to look for weed growers and if they did they cant tell what is causing the heat image.
dont be paranoid the police dont use choppers to look for dope growers its not cost effective and is not exersized.

Yea it usto be legal where i live to do it but now in most places a warrent is needed to conduct any kind of thermal scanning.

I watched the show DEA, and they showed how they busted a pot grower. What happen was one of their informants snitched about a grow house in a basement. That gave them a cause to use thermal imaging on the neighborhood. So they sat at a tv while the helicopter flew over the neighborhood, and they said what they were looking for was a house to explode on the camera. When they found the house the light looked to be about the size of a chimeny shooting up the side of the house. Fortunately they don't have the funds to do thermal imaging of an entire city. So as one DEA agent put it. "There out there. We just need to find them. So you should be fine.

The thermal cameras show difference in temp on the surface they are scanning as different shades - they don't see through the wall. You could use a cutting torch inside a room and not be visible unless the temp in the whole room raises to much above surrounding rooms.

A window will show hotter than the exterior wall in the winter, and missing insulation or air leaks in the building envelope will show up.
If one room in your house was much warmer than the rest of the house the exterior walls might show hotter, but if the room is close to the temp of the rest of the house it would not show anything.

The problem comes from dumping large amounts of heat out of the house - that shows up well.

So I hear.. polyurethane blocks thermal readings (I have no source for this, I read it from a post on here).

The post I got it from mentioned some show on TV where they were searching for this dude and he put polyurethane on his head (fucking weirdo right?) so that when they did thermal searches with helicopters he didn't show up... worked for him.

So if (definitely emphasis on the if) it were to work, you could put a layer of polyurethane around your grow room.

this is also my understanding of it.... the way i see it, as long as you arent growing huge with multiple 1000watters, or arent, as you said, dumping large amounts of heat out of the house; you really dont have anything to worry about
