The wonderful world of triploids

If you havent seen a triploid before well here it is. It is basically a cannabis plant that keeps topping itself.

Here it is as a baby, notice the three alternating leaves rather than two alternating leaves. After awhile you start to get two alternating leaves and the plant tops itself once.

Then this happens.

then you end up with another top

And in all the plant looks like this.

Had a polyploid in 1986 that someone said was from the UW. It was light green with white variegation and deformed leaves. I was not impressed with it's growth and didn't have the room to keep it around as a novelty so I didn't have it long. I was told the seeds, that it grew from, had been treated with Colchicine to induce polyploidy.

my triploid said to be a fem green crack seed but it's really unknown.
Did yours continue growth sets of 3's? Ive never seen that before. Ive only seen a polyploid on the internet, never really came across one. I am just wondering if I clone it, will it continue to self top?

What LEDs you running? or are those actinic bulbs or whatever

Wow thats weird!

Never seen that before!

Can you see any advantage in preserving that phenotype? Breed it with an auto and get self topping auto plants?

its not really a phenotype. Its more like autism in humans. the plant has an extra chromosome on i think the 23rd set causing this to happen. By some rare chance it happens again and I bred the two, the off spring would be more likely to have it happen, but its not really set and stone. I believe, but I am not positive, if I kept singling out only those plants and breeding them after awhile you might be able to get a 75/25 ratio but never would it be guaranteed. I dont think you can breed autism in humans so I do not think you can breed it in plants. (not saying the plants are really autistic...)

Three leaves does not make it a triploid. It would more correctly be termed trifoliate. A triploid would have three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. The leaf conformation does not reflect the number of sets of chromosomes. Triploids usually result from the crossing of a tetraploid and a diploid. They are usually sterile and will not breed, even with another triploid.

Nice.

I've had a couple. Both were from seeds from green house seeds. Cheese and great white shark.

Good times!

hey , I'm not sure what panel I had that under at the time, I think maybe the welthink wex150 and a 4 tube t5 with blue actinic and a few other odd tubes. yeah it's continued sets of three since day one.

that would be a tri-foliate. The one I have branched out at the 3rd node and stopped leaf sets of three. Now it has 4 tops, two I created and two it created on its own. If I hadnt topped it recently it would have three tops, two it created and the one main cola they always have. Mine is a true Triploid or whatever definition means it has an extra chromosome or whatever term bests fits my description.

Thanks for the clarification. I should have known that. My bad.
You are welcome sir! It's all good. Just some links and clarification to help if you or anyone else wanted to research it further and not get confunkled looking for the wrong thing.
