hey vo, let me ask you a question. do you start counting your veg when you put your sprout in your hydroton or when you see roots through the hydroton? if that makes sence.

I start counting my veg when I put cubes into their DWC's. Even if (like this time around) they aren't fully sprouted yet.

Hmm... I don't know what day it is.. I don't care. It will have finished 2 weeks on Friday and we'll start week 3, but I think she's getting hungry (BC1) and I'm waiting until my Biocat gets here..

Hey VO, looking good. In your 3.5 bucket (6 inch netpot, I assume?), how much nute soup do you put in upon fresh res change? I'm having a logistics issue in my 5gal buckets (10 inch net pot) because my soup line is far too close to the bottom of the net pot to keep a res from going dry so fast (I work A LOT!). Also, I think you and I are in agreement regarding independent run-to-waste (no recirc, no central control), and I don't want it, even if it's the easiest solution - so really just getting a feel for your average watering schedule once plants are in teenage veg...

I don't have any nutes going right now.. but I will soon as the beneficial microbes get here.. and they will be a very low dose. What were the other questions?

Okay so the microbes just came in the mail and my babies got very low dosages of both microbes and veg nutes.

How many gals of water, VO - my guess is 1.5 to 2, but when roots hit the soup, I like my reservoir line a good two inch minimum from the bottom of the netpot - that means I'm watering like mad when the girls hit full veg. I assume you've used the 3.5 gal buckets in a previous DWC grow and know how much water you used for that one. My problem is being able to maintain the frequency, so I tend to let the res line get too high, endangering the plants with overwatering. I was hoping you had some helpful insight.

I start about half an inch from the rockwool, then I lower it a couple inches later pre-flower. As long as the water level isn't on the rockwool you're fine, but you're depending on your airpump to oxygenate your roots.

So from what I've read (and I realize there's a lot of bullshit), even with great oxygenation, it is recommended that water line be below netpot versus wool cube - I have roughly an inch to 1.5 inches of hydroton between my wool bottom and the bottom of netpot - you've experienced no probs with very little room between netpot bottom and waterline? The air space is truly unnecessary if res is highly oxygenated? Just trying not to drown my roots...thanks for entertaining the line of questions. Peace.

I have listened to people argue over this subject for a long time so I decided to do a side by side test to see for myself. Here is what I have found. 2 plants started at the same time same every thing except one the water was kept about 1.5" below the net pot the other was kept full 1.5" into the net pot. the one kept in to the net pot as you can see has twice as many roots.

+rep faller; your visual comparison just set me totally on point! Please swing through my journal at any time you may feel bored enough to give a newb a few tips. I just totally 'effed up a grow and I'm heading for round three with a handful of beans.

Yeah Fyk if you keep it below the rockwool (like you should during seedling/sproutling stage) it will be fine with proper oxygenation. Once a good root system is established, I drop the level.
