I watched this guy in the 1980s come out of Michigan and become an instant dominant force in the NBA. It was fun watching him play. He was Anthony Davis before Anthony Davis was born. Tarpley could run, he was athletic for a 7-footer, a strong rim protector, and he could score.
But alcoholism and drug addiction ended his promising career soon after it began. And now he's dead, at 50 years old.
Here's a hint at how good he was, for those of you who never got to see him play: even in the midst of serious alcohol and drug addiction, he still averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. But the drugs eventually won.
He got clean a few times here and there, but none of his quits ever lasted long.
RIP Roy Tarpley.
