The Sad Story of Roy Tarpley

I watched this guy in the 1980s come out of Michigan and become an instant dominant force in the NBA. It was fun watching him play. He was Anthony Davis before Anthony Davis was born. Tarpley could run, he was athletic for a 7-footer, a strong rim protector, and he could score.

But alcoholism and drug addiction ended his promising career soon after it began. And now he's dead, at 50 years old.

Here's a hint at how good he was, for those of you who never got to see him play: even in the midst of serious alcohol and drug addiction, he still averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. But the drugs eventually won.

He got clean a few times here and there, but none of his quits ever lasted long.

RIP Roy Tarpley.

Sad stories .......
JR Richards....former Astros pitcher,he would have been one of the best.He was 6'9" 220! and led the majors in strikeouts, era, runs per inning allowed.I don't think he's dead but in his prime he had a stroke, blood clot, cocaine addiction, which totally ruined his career. He became homeless and found bumming under a bridge

Hank Gathers....former Loyola Marymount forward who led the ncaa in scoring AND rebounding!Dude was a badass who out of no where,on live tv, collapsed and died on the court....Sad soo sad

Roy Tarpley was not as good as you think he was:) Anthony Davis would have run circles around Roy.Roy Tarpley was a dope head who fucked his career away, his own fault.

Still a sad story though....RIP
