The RubberMaid Club

I have 2 3" passive intakes on the sides of lower box. I use a 4" ttype exhaust. Kind of works like a light trap. The same with the elbowed intakes. I use a 3.5 inch computer fan as my exhaust fan. I had the elbows on the inside pointing down to help with lightproofing. But i lost grow space. So since stealth isnt that big of a deal in my situation i moved them to the outside. Now they intake the cooler floor air. Darkrook louvers would probably be the stealthiest intakes.

BUt since this was my first cab I went with the simplest design.

Thanks for your reply my friend. I truly appreciate it. Here is a post that I made earlier, which gives a better description to my current situation, so here we go......What's going on to anyone who happens to read this. I'm new here as of last night, but have been a member of 2 other forum sites based on the subject at hand, which would of course be learning how to grow the Green Gift provided by good ol' Mother earth.
Ok now, so I am trying to finish up a Rubbermaid (50gal.) grow box, which consists of 2 Rubmaids that are hinged together on one side of the long end. So it allows me to lift it open when doing my gardening as needed. I started the box approximately 6 Months ago, but had to take a recess since I had a lack of funds, as well as getting caught up in other thing's in this stressful life of ours. Well my head is now back in the game and i am determined to finish my beautifully envisioned Grow project.
The box consists of everything that is needed for completion except for the following: Fans for intake air, as well as another for out take air. I also need a Passive intake PVC elbow. Or do I need a passive intake? This is the part where my questions come in. Just to make it clear to anyone reading this, I have done tons of research and reading on both the building of grow boxes and the actual growing process, but I have come across some conflicting information from various sources, which is understandable. I guess you just need to decipher the information on your own and do as much narrowing down as needed for determining the most factual and best information available.
So, my main thing and focus is to get the box completed properly and not built in a half assed fashion. I want the environment in the box to be built best for my future babies. Ok, now sorry I keep getting off track it seem's lol. But anyways, where exactly should my intake fans be mounted on the box. Top right or left of the side of the box? Please keep in mind that as i had stated above, the box consists of a top rubmaid and a bottom rubmaid, with the top one upside down and the bottom one standing normally, so that both lips meet. This Box will be stored in a dresser style closet which is about 8' long and 4' feet wide(plenty of room.) So should both of my Fans be mounted on the top section of the rubmaid box or should one of the fans be mounted on the bottom half with the other on the top? I've read some information saying so many sorts of methods, but the one i'm referring to is the fan posistioning. One person will say mount it here or mount it there. Put that here, put that there, so on and so forth... I've even read about people using only an out take fan with 1 PVC elbow mounted on the outside of the box acting as the route for getting air circulation through the growing environment. So basically the elbow takes in the air as the out take fan blows it out.
Could anyone help out a fellow brother and clarify the positioning factors of the Fans as well as the Passive intake/out take of the PVC elbow? Also How many fans will i be needing? (I'm gonna go with the 12 V Radio shack computer fans) And last but not least, how many PVS elbows will I need for the completion of my project?
I just wanna say that I truly appreciate any answers to my important questions, as they are vital for my long overdue self sufficient growing system to produce my greens. I also love the process of watching plants develop and appreciating the fruits of labor. I've done one grow which flowered but was done in a real half assed setup, which was reflected by the quality of the smoke. Practice makes perfect as the saying goes, and I know that if I'm able to get a proper and efficient box built, that it will pay off over time as my gardening skills and growing techniques develop with experience. Thanks again guy's. This will be my third post on this forum site, yippie... Please don't blow me off due to my lack of posts , as they will grow over time. Peace out my friends!!!

depends on your settup.

I would go with darkroom louvers for intakes. I would put them either on the sides or rear. They will keep light in and thats good. I will probably do that sometime in the future to mine. The general rule of thumb for ventilation is you want your passive intakes to be double your active exhaust. So in my case i have 1 3" exhaust and 2 3" intakes. You also want to make sure the passive intakes are installed above your containers or pots. So you have the most efficient airflow as possible. You want to make sure your exhausting hot air out the top while sucking in fresh air from the bottom. You can never move anymore air out your exhaust than the fan can push. So therefore active intakes are kind of pointless in theses small boxes. Read up on static pressure and shit.

I went with best buy over radio shack as bestbuy has higher cfm computer fans. But any old computer parts will do. You can get a dc power supply from any old electronic appliance. Old cellphones etc... 12v is the best but ive seen it done with 5. Just trying to show you that some parts are free and everywhere if moneys tight. www.newegg.com has the best fans for the buck.

How are your lights gonna be settup. That also adds variables to the equation.

Get her planned real good before you start cuttin. Thats my best advise.

The thing about cfls is they are most efficient within 4 inches. After that you lose a ton of lumens. So i kind of visualize a bubble around the lights. And i always keep my plants bud sites and fan leaves in that bubble.

So thats more food for thought.

wow im psyched to find this club lol. Im just starting up my first grow, and this setup is perfect for my sitiation. I got all the supplies, and attached 2- 40W cfls, 4- 13w cfls, and a 15w 18" florescent tube. In the top box, i've hooked up a diy carbon filter. There is another weaker fan just inside the box moving the air in the box around, and right now theres just a hole cut out of the bottom box for intake.

the problem is that i looked today and my temperature was up over 95 degrees. Two modifications im thinking will lower the temp are getting another pc fan to replace the empty hole for intake, and ive got a bigger fan im going to use to replace the weak fan inside the box. Do you think these mods will fix my problem, and is there anything else i could try? (different fan locations, etc).

Also, off topic, since most of you guys are experienced with growing inside these boxes, how many flowering plants do you think i'll be able to grow at a time. I was thinking that i could manage 3, but i saw the first pic with only 2 plants, and it looked kinda tight. The strain is bubblicious, and im going to be topping/ possibly lst.
How are you exhausting your air. And where exactly are your intakes located. And do you only have 1 passive intake. YOu will need 2x the exhaust size for it to have proper vent. Your scrubber might be slowing it down to.

Show me pics if ya can
