The pheno hunt

Is there a certain number of plants one would want to grow if he were pheno hunting? With regular seeds in this case. Super high quality but have 13 mix of male and female. My older friend who grows suggests a pheno hunt isn't really a pheno hunt unless you have 50+plants to work with.
