The Official Canna Coco & Nutrients Thread

Oh, I'll be posting often (and soon at that)....still have some questions regarding Canna products and methods, so stay tuned ;)

Not only am I a first time Coco user, but first time grower as well. This whole process (researching for the last 2 months has been very cool). I could be more excited about growing it than I will be smoking it..lol. Haven't smoked in 3 months now (the longest stretch for me in almost 20 years).

Just ordering my seeds this week (Purple Kush or BC Big Bud) and will have my tent done within the next 1-2 weeks....then the real fun begins :) I'm just nervous about f'n it up....I'm one of those types that likes to have everything planned out before I execute but being it's a first time for me....I'll have to learn as I go I guess. The great thing is place (RIU) seems to have some great people here who don't mind helping out a noob like me. So thank you!

I would recommend the blue cheese from big Buddha it's one of the nice ones out there cheese yet very fruity

Coco is the best for the new growers as its very hard to mess up with, u don't have to worry about over watering as you would with soil, but a ph meter is a must! And keep ur ph at 5.8

That's the whole reason why I choose Coco to use as my first time...research does pay off ;)

I'll actually post my entire set up tomorrow along with what I'm planning on using to get your thoughts. I do want to keep things relatively simple for now.

Then I'll post a few questions regarding techniques I'm still unclear about. Oh, I already have my ph meter so no worries!

Alright, plans fell through...so here goes....

The Set Up

Secret Jardin DR90II Grow Tent (3ft x 3ft x 6.5ft)
600W Lumatek Digital Ballast
600W HPS GE Lucalux Bulb
Air Cool Cylinder Reflector
MountainAir 320 6" 380CFM
ActiveAir Inline Fan 6" 400CFM
Sunlift Hanging System for the light

Oakton EcoTester Digital pH Meter
Thermo-Hygrometer
Timer

I'm going to use the biggest pots I can fit in there for 4-5 plants (probably 4 gal round pots).
Using Canna Coco Substrate & Perlite
Nutes will be Canna Coco A+B and Rhizotonic

Now, my first question is...a grower told me to not mix the Coco and perlite, but to put about 20% of the perlite at the bottom of the pot then fill the rest with Coco. It looks like most people mix the two, but his statement was the while perlite retains water and the coco will draw it up as needed, this method also acts as a better drainage for the runoff. Is he right and does this make more sense to do?

While I am aware that pH levels should be between 5.6 - 6.0, I know I'll have more question regarding this as I go forward. Plus I know I'll have questions about nutes (applications) once I have to start after the 2 weeks of veg. So I'll post those questions when I need the answers..lol

Also, once I've germinated my seeds, I'd like to just put them directly into these pots. Is that ok? I don't really want to transplant anything if I don't have to ;)

Another question is, how far above the pots do I put the light once they've been planted?

Again, I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible, hence why I'm not using CFL or MH at this time or not wanting to transplant. While I know this setup isn't ideal (lights) this hps bulb was highly recommended because of it's specs (blue light production)

Technical Specs:
+ 92,000 initial lumens
+ 2100°K
+ 20,000 hour life-span.It has the highest PAR rating (meaning it has the highest plant-usable light output) of any bulb on the market, in addition to having 30% more blue spectrum than a standard HPS bulb.

Oh and btw, I'm cheating and using feminized seeds..lol

Also, I'm nervous about ordering seeds from overseas (I'm in Canada) hence why I'd rather order within this country, although some of the stuff in the UK looks great!

So my current choices of in stock seeds are (and feminized)....

BC Big Bud
NYC Diesel
The Purps
Super Silver Haze
White Widow

Anyone have any thoughts on these?

Before I had to quit 3 months ago....I was a constant Bubblegum Kush smoker.

EDIT: Ok, I just found out about Herbie's in the UK and I'm going to order from there.

Leaning towards getting the Vanilla Kush and LSD (both feminized)

I've been planning to do a coco grow in 2 or 3 gallon smart pots, 6 under 600w in 4x4. I was planning to use Hydroponic Research's Veg+Bloom powder fert but I read that the general consensus is that Canna Coco is the best, better than botanicare coco so now I'm thinking why not use Canna nutes as well??? What should I get, A+B and PK 13/14? and should I run a mix of perlite with my coco and if so at what ratio? I'll be hand watering to start but probably going to blumats. I have a few harveys in 100% perlite hempy with GH lucas formula so not a total nub, just wanting to try coco out cause I'll be deciding between that and perlite hempys for moms and then giving DWC a try.

I believe that's the right thing to do but it would let more air at the bottom not more water. It would be good s it wouldn't stay soggy all the time that's why you fill the bottom of a coco hempy bucket with perlite or hydroton. It's so the coco can dry out and not suck up too much water all the time. So I think he is right what he said, but for the opposite reason that he said, lol? I'm also thinking about mixing some perlite through out but I would also put a layer of pure perlite at the bottom to aid drainage and prevent damp feet.

EDIT: Do you guys have to use any CalMag with A+B coco when using RO?

YES - Additional Cal Mg is a MUST with RO and Canna Coco, any Cal Mg supplement of your choice should be sufficient as long as it's suitable for Coco. Either do like 5ml a Gallon or if you want to do it by ppm it may save you a bit on Cal Mg useage. Just figure out how much Cal mg Canna assumes is already in the water (they will say somewhere on the label, or website i forgot lol) Say 100 ppm for example, but your RO is lets say 15ppm So Just add Cal Mg to your res till you reach 115 PPM and your good to go. Keep track of how much you added to achieve this and you will know how much to add per gallon to achieve the desired level of Cal Mg without unnecessarily wasting any.

Happy Gardening! :weed:bongsmilie:peace:

Hey azcanna have you used tea with canna coco? Im trying to figure how to add tea to my feeding schedule. I know with canna you have to a feeding everytime. Would tea count as a feeding without A+B? My tea would be some bennies, molasses, and earthworm castings. I was told not to ph tea either but what if its ph aint in the 5.5-6.2 range?

I'm going to use Coco A+B and Rhizo for sure....I've already bought the 5L set of A+B (it was on sale :) ) but I still have to pick up the Rhizo (and it's not on sale). So my question is how much Rhizo would I end up using for a grow of 4-5 plants? Just deciding which size to buy (250ml, 1L or 5L)...please don't say 5L as it's crazy expensive :( I'm hoping the 1L is enough....

And the second question is, IF I decided to end up using another additive, what's the next best one? Boost (which the guy at the store tried to sell me), PK or Cannazym? I don't want to do them all......at least not this time around.

You should be fine with the 250ml for 1 round of that many plants. And if you don't use all the additives, the next thing you should use is the boost. I highly recommend using the entire line though

If I can use the 250ml that would be great! Then I will get boost as well (it just went on sale too $55off for the 1L) Thanks Puff.

Depending on how long you veg... You use lots more in veg than bloom... I'd say get the PK 13/14 as the next thing, it's cheap as hell and if you had to choose i'd do it over the boost. But thats my personal opinion, i think the boost is overpriced so I haven't used it.... yet. But I ran the full line other than boost and subbed H&G Bud XL and a sweetner of my choice and everything worked out great! Plus you can choose the flavor of sweetner you are going to use accordingly by strain, boost is... well... boost flavored lol

Edit: And the PK you only use a little bit for a short time, the 250ml bottle will be PLENTY for a few grows probably. If you got 5L's of base id say get 1L of Rhizo and 250ml of PK and go from there with whatever else you can afford. If Boost is out of budget get a regular sweetner at 1/4 or less the cost instead. I really liked the Bud XL + Sweetner of choice combo so I might just keep doing that and try Boost 1 run to see if I think there is enough value in it to justify it's exuberant price.

Yes the tea would count as a feeding, id do it maybe 1 or 2 times a week at most. Drain your res a day early, fill with tea, run as normal 1 day. Drain, back to coco nutes.

I would not use the product knows as "Bennies" in hydro EVER! It clogs the hell outs things and makes them very dirty. The Canna Coco is already charged with their own bennies anyway.

I think what you are referring to is don't PH it if your going to foliar feed. Which I DO Ph my foliar at least somewhat if it's way wayyy (like a ph of below 4 or over 8 ) out of wack. Then i get it somewhere in the ballpark and call it good.

I would absolutely PH the tea for root feeding, however I could be wrong there. That's just how i would do it as nutrients are only available to plants at certain PH ranges.

Thanks for the intel AZ! Just keep in mind this is my first grow.....EVER! (been smoking for almost 20 years, then my guy stopped growing. 3 months ago and I've been SOL since, hence my need to grow my own). So I don't want my brain to explode with all these nutes. If I do pick them all up, I'm going to need help figuring some of this out..lol With the Boost being on sale right now, I might just grab it too ;)

I guess the sweetener would go well with Chocolope (2 plants)....the other plant will be Critical Kush (2-3 plants)

First thing, your setup, if I'm understanding right you have a fan that's going to blow air out of ur tent vio the air cooled reflector, and you have another fan to suck air in the tent, you will not need the fan blowing air into the tent, the tent will suck air in its self it doesn't matter if you have a negative air pressure, that's what u want

About mixing in with coco, most coco growers have different opinions in what to mix, I personaly mix claypebbles in my coco and also put a 2 inch layer of claypebbles at the bottom of the bot, I used perlite and I'm much more impressed with claypebbles, it's ur choice what want to mix in your coco but I recommend you to put claypebbles at the bottom rather then perlite,

All you need to do is keep your ph at 5.8 that works best for allmost all coco growers,

Ones germinated I put may in rootriots and ones I see a tap root I ether plant it in the final size pot or start with a smal pot and work may way to bigger pot, but bk to ur question as its ur first grow your better off putting ur germinated seed in 2 L pots and then the final size,

Your pots u say u want, 4galon pots witch works out aprox 19Liter if your not going to train your plants or top them I would say your pots are to large, you might end up with 6ft plant if your not careful I would advise 11Liter pots for a first grow and keep in mind your plant will double in size up to 2-3x the size ones in flower some times bigger if in bigger pots, bigger pots = bigger roots which = bigger plant

Thanks nas. There is only 1 inline fan (not 2 was you thought - the mountianair is the carbon filter)

So I HAVE TO transplant? I was hoping I could put the germinated seed into 1 pot for the entire grow.

Regardless, I'd like to know how high do I put the 600W HPS light from the top of the pots after planting the germinated seed? (is it 3-3.5ft? and then keep raising it as the plants get taller to get that same distance until harvest?)

Those dont look bad, id say go for it. The product i was saying not to use is called "The Bennies" and is only really good for soil.
