aye when starting new nutes just give water for a couple days before hand then nutes at 1/2 dose then regular feedings after that....ideally you want a ppm of 0 to start that way when adding nutes you know excatly whats beings added...if your water ppm is above 300 r/o is what i recomend...peace az

Thanks for the replys ill give them water tonight and start the new nutes tomorrow. anyone using Canna nutes? Ive heard good things about them so i'm giving them a go.

Hey AZ, thanks for all the great info. I'm dying to Hempy. Do you think I could BOG my 2 gallon soil pots into a 5 gallon Hempy bucket? Or should I just wait for my next grow?

has any1ever tried sphagnum moss instead of the vermiculite? i am having a hard time getting a large supply of vermiculite, but sphagnum is everywhere. i started 2 pots 1 with a mini palm my GF keeps almost killing, and a pepper plant, to see how it works. if it is just to fill in empty space, and help with the wick feeding, i dont see why it wont work. if any1 else has tried this, please give feedback.

Toss a sponge or two in a blender.

sponges was a thought, but 1 of the hempy buckets i want to try this summer, is a 15 Gl rubbermaid tub. i want to try 5 different size pots, with all same genetics, to see what i get the biggest/fastest results with. that is alot of sponge in the long run. it would be cheaper to get the mini 6 Qt bags, then to grind sponge.

what about mixing coco coir insted of moss???...peace az

coir i was told needed a different ingredients for hydro grows. i was thinking the longer strands of sphagnum will help the wick feeder system work better. i am getting lots of feedback, and thank you all, but is there any reason sphagnum wont work? i started 2 jalapeños this way 2 days ago, and they have turned darker green, and grew2 In already in 2 days. this is why i posted in here, to see if there was any who tried it this way, to see any probs i might have in the future. i would love to use coir, and might in 1or 2, to see the diff. but the spagnum is way cheaper here, by almost 50% a bag of same size, so i was hopeing some1 else might of tried it, to save me heart ache

yes people have used it an it does work...i suggested coco coir as i have seen people get better results using that....you plan on running 3parts per-lite 1 part moss???...peace az

do i use perlite? and should i start out in soil, cause i have some small plants in soil i would like to do hempy with.

yes you sure can start them in dirt an move it over to a hempy buclet..its best to do this in the first 2 weeks tho only enough for the plant to root an stalize when new to buckets..i recomend using 100% per-lite but you can use 3to1 per-lite vermaculite/coco coir....peace az

what about using those little balls that are used in hydro and putting a air stone at bottom? But in the hempy style?

might as well plug the hole and remove the clay pellets and go dwc...

the point of hempy is to get away from pumps and air stones

was just curious. Just thought airstone would make double sure of oxygenation.

trust me the growth seen from hempy buckets is more then enough....airstones would only get in the way....peace az

Just put a 1 inch hole in your HB and enough fresh air will get into the bucket.. Also if you are worried about oxygen movement you can put a one inch hole in the bucket and right across from it put another one inch hole... So basically you have double the O2 coming into the bucket.. But a regular one hole bucket works perfect..

I just harvested 2 plants from HBs here is a pic of the roots from one, I dont think they needed any more oxygen.....

tbh, thats wrong...
the holes are just there to provide drainage at the right level for runnoff to prevent overwateringyour plants...
the oxygen get to the roots from the water... the "dissolved oxygen" in the water (DO)... the more DO, the better/faster the root growth you'll get... thats why its a good idea to keep an air stone in any rez's of water and/or nutes you keep stored around... DO is high straight from the tap but only hours later quickly reduces to much less efficient amounts...

thats the reason why hydroponics works so much faster and more productive than soil grows... they're able to provide more DO to the root systems... soil pots stay damp normally for a few days on end... watering generally is only done a couple times a week, which means that the water in the root system is not nearly as good the 2nd or 3rd day soaking as it was the first... with hydro you're getting fresh water (fresh water means oxygenated water) usually daily if not multiple times a day...

plus nutes can generally be better controlled and dialed in in a hydro grow than in soil grows...

anyways... back to the hempy buckets... they are basically manual flood systems, flooding generally everyday/every other day...

the holes on the side are not bringing oxygen to the roots..

... and please, i hope this doesn't come off as mean or snobbish or anything, i just want to make sure the correct info is handed out...
