The Buttery Chronicles - Trying to get more buttery!

This is my second batch of butter from the same outdoor crop. Batch #1, I lost a significant amount of butter in the process. Started out with 2 lbs, 4 cups. Yielded (3/4 cup + 1 1/2 cup + 1/3 of a cup = 2.6 cups) Meaning 1.4 cups LOST!!!! Must have been lost in the straining. Too much lost!!!!!

So this time, I'm going to pour boiling water over the sludge, as well as trying to squeeze out all the butter.

Supplies:

- crock pot
- strainers of varying size
- cheesecloth
- spatula
- juice jug (for easy pouring) and containers

Ingreidents:

- 2 lbs of unsalted butter (2 cups per lb)
- boiling water
- 4 oz finely finely ground shake/ weed

In this case, the shake was from outdoor plants where the buds did not turn out super potent. This batch was a mutt, couple of different plants in it.
1. light green, dry outdoor plant.
2. dark purple, sticky outdoor plant.

Of the 4 oz of shake, half was from purple plant bud leftovers - that was first screened to make hash. The other half was a mixture of screened green plant bud leftovers, and all shake from all plants.

I melted the butter on the stove, with about 1.5 L of boiling water.

Then to the crocky pot:

After 24 hours, the water mostly boiled off.

Then the straining. This is a super sludgie batch, because it's shake. Messy process.

First I did it my normal way, by straining.

But this time, unlike my previous butters, I poured boiling water all over the sludge at the end, to get all the butter remnants off of everything.

I am sure I yielded more butter this time than the last, so yay!!!!

Almost done!!!
About 36 hours after I started!

Last batch, yielded 2 full batches of cookies (3/4 cup butter in one, and 1 1/2 cup butter in the other) with a 1/3 cup leftover for a mini batch.

Once I finish draining, I'll know the yield on this one. But eyeballing, it's more than last time for sure!

The super big "mason jar" was key. I used to pour the butter into something the size of a juice jug, so there wasn't much room for adding extra water.

I like the idea of using one of those jam-straining contraptions - it would be way less messy than the cheese-cloth/ finger-squeeze method.

Is boiling water the way to go - and I've just been wasteful for YEARS?

Durp.

No - and AWESOME!

Is it big? 4 oz of fine fine shake is a lot to squeeze if it's the size of a garlic press...
The one I have holds roughly a cup, so I line it with cheese cloth & pore the liquid through. The squeezing operation has to be done in a couple stages ~ But well worth it not having hot ass butter/water scalding your hands.

Buy a cheap dish drain, you know the ones that sit in the drain in the kitchen sink. It fits perfectly into mason jars. I wrap my weed I simmer in the crockpot in a paper coffee filter and mash it down hard into the kitchen sink drain screen while its over the mason jar and it's always worked well for me.

You going to post more photos of your process or what?

I haven't read through the thread completely yet. Gonna do it in a few and check how my method differs from yours. I know it didn't take two days for mine, that may have been the key. I rushed through mine and had it solidified in less than a day.

The way to go is to extract the resin then disolve that in warm butter.
no big mess, easier to dose. No green nasty smell taste.
dry sift the trichs off on a screen.
blast it with butane or whatever your prefered method of removing the resin glands.

Do you know where to get one of those tubes for the butane? I've been wanting to make shatter.

You can find them all over the net.
I ordered a 3 ft 304 stainless tube snd lab grade plug.
for small batches like a few grams people use the stainless turkey baster at bed batc n beyond.
For what it is worth hand rubbing kief is way safer if you dont do your homework and
stick to the rules butane is prolly not a good idea.
If you choose that route hit the concentrate section n read until you have questions then ask.
