Tasty LED discussion thread

Hey gents, I just found this post after posting a Tasty LED inquiry in another thread. I'm currently running two ViparSpectra PAR 600W units in a 4x8. I'd like to upgrade to a cree based setup but the unit of measurement seems to be inconsistent between Tasty and ViparSpectra. Either that or I'm in over my head and haven't learned enough yet. My question though is I'm currently about $550 into lighting. I haven't had these VS units long and amazon prime's return policy rocks so could I get equal or better performance while being more efficient for close to the same investment with Tasty's offerings bearing in mind my tent is 4x8?

Definitely return the VS's. Buy a tasty.

The problem is I don't know which tasty units I'd need in order to support my grow. Currently in a 4'x8' with 6 plants in 3G smart-pots. I'll never have more than 6 cannabis plants going however I'll be adding a few dwarf tomato and pepper plants to scavenge unused light. It looks like based purely on the recommendations on his product details page that I could be covered with dual T2-2100 units. It would be $200 more that my current setup.

Would you guys agree?

Hi @slow_grow A T2-2100 probably has similar output, for less wattage and will last over the long run but it's very possible you wouldn't be happy with two units of either in a 4x8. I recommend 2 T2-2100s in a 3x3 so whatever you're getting from 1 Vipar in a 3x3 (their recommendation) isn't going to be very intense comparatively... although the way you're describing the layout it sounds like you're not trying to go balls to the wall in the whole 4x8.

So... maybe. It just depends on what your expectations are.

What were you running before the Vipars?

Your assumption is dead on, I like the perimeter of the tent to be clear enough for me to walk/scootch with my back against the wall all around. Before these I had 2 vipar reflector 300s in a 5x5 but same situation, I could creep around the entire inside perimeter. I expanded so I could start growing gobs of veggies year-round. I'm clumsy and just about over the hill. If I have to do anything tricky, something on the floor will get smashed for sure.

I grow for my wife and I only so maximum yield isn't an obsession at all, in fact I'm so new that I'm hoping to simply get through to curing with my first grow. I plan to grow cannabis only once or twice per year while filling the tent chock full with veggies the rest of the time. The root of my concern was from me thinking crap, did I just blow nearly $600 on lighting when I could have gotten what the big boys use while not spending a whole lot more. I firmly believe in "you get what you pay for" but I think the stuff you gents are rocking is on another order of magnitude that I shouldn't worry about hanging with at this time haha.

Rahz is the owner of Tasty FYI.
And it's not about getting just good enough light from the VS, it's the quality, rock hard buds, you and your wife will ENJOY using Cobs. I can attest, you won't regret buying any cob light.

The lamps are moving to 3000K 90CRI in the next batch. Similar level of blue for veg and red shift to 630nm.

Playing around with bringing the 1400 Series back, but different this time. They will be the same wattage as the 2100 series but additional emitters will provide increase efficiency. I'll be throwing a couple T2-1400s (3x 3590s at 1.4 amps) in stock and possibly some T4-1400s (6x 3590s at 1.4 amps) not too far down the road. This change will lower the cost per watt for 1400 series lamps over the original models. Red powder coating.

I'm Playing around with lapping and polishing the sinks.

Small price drop is likely when the next batch is released.

Clearance items have been reduced.

Hand lapping huge heatsinks isn't happening. I'm trying to find someone locally that has a drum sander so I can try it out. Anyone ever use one? I'm concerned that if the work piece doesn't go through evenly the surface will end up pitted in spots from the drum. Polishing is somewhat time consuming too but if I can get the lapping down to a few minutes it might be worth it.

I'm still trying to decide whether it's worth it at all though. After lapping a few of the sinks I've noticed that some of them can use it more than others. Some are close to perfect minus the surface variations. Some could use a bit of lapping but it's basically a situation where the high points on the inside are about the same as the low points on the outside. I don't think lapping/polishing will change the amount of thermal compound necessary to mount the cobs much... but they do look pretty when it's done.

For most even surface like you know doing a figure 8 on glass surface is best. So unless it's on machine that's stupid expensive it likely will not be perfect. Personally I think your time and professionalism is worth more than 3degc delta/t increase

Weve already confirmed that sanding heatsinks doesn't improve heat transfer at all. I think it was real styles or growmau5 that did a side by side, hour long temp test.
