Taking pictures with HPS on. FYI

I just thought I'd try this and it works pretty well.
My gopro self corrects for the available light, but the other camera, (7D), has adjustable settings .
So I looked up the Kelvin of HPS lamps and it is around 1900 to 2100 Kelvin. My white balance will go down to 2250, and that's a lot closer to acceptable than auto balance.

This was thought up so I didn't have to shut down the 400w HPS lamp for a shot.
Here is normal auto setting.Grow-Dec-13-03.jpg

And here is 2250 Kelvin Grow-Dec-13-01.jpg

That's cool. I have a T3, and have been trying the "custom white balance" with no luck. The 'auto tungsten' stinks. Been shooting flash under-exposed -2 in Manual instead, with ok results. Your pics inspire me to try again!!
Peace.

I think you'd get more reflectivity with the mylar higher by like at least a foot...

Just saying...

Plants looks great! And cool tip on the white balance! I should mess with my camera settings I haven't done that in a while...

You can also change the white balance after the fact with photoshop or something similar if you're shooting a raw file.

Just for a lark, here is a Raw and a JPEG, (I always shoot both) straight from the camera, only a resize. Shot at 2500 Kelvin under HPS.
Dang thing is growing like a , a, a weed ! More mylar! That is just wrapping paper on the wall.
BTW This is a Miracle Grow Hydro setup. Thread in the hydro forum.

Know what else works fairly well is simply turning off the HID lamp and using the camera flash, or normal lighting.

Some of those white balance presets like Tungsten or a custom setting do help with lights on though.

Yeah, those look good @Kygos . My camera auto settings only go down to 3000k, but even at that setting, the pics looked crappy.

I took some great pics using the custom white balance. Took a piece of plane white paper, took a pic of the paper under the hps, and set that pic in the menu. That dropped the custom kelvin setting low enough for the pics to have perfect color.

Well the point here is that you don't have to turn off the HID lamp and wait for it to cool down and then power it up again.
Which I really don't like doing, I am sure it shortens bulb life.

Yep, 2nd bathroom. Thanksgiving guests had to use 1st bathroom as this one was "not working"
Takes care of leaks and drips. Open the lid on the reservoir and drain and fill right from the spigot.
Will add better disconnects for hoses next grow. White shower curtain works as reflector too.
Have run out of room , must lower the plant today. It grows like a weed lol.
Thanks for the kudos.
