Sylvania 1000w HPS Bulbs?

I never really understood the difference between say Sylvania HPS bulbs ($20) vs a high end Ushio Hilux Gro ($100+). The only difference I can really see is just a bit more lumens. But is $80 really worth it?

Take a look at specs:

Sylvania 1000 Watt EPA Compliant HPS bulb

The spectrum graphs look nearly identical to me. Is there REALLY a difference between these that justify the price tag? I could get 6 of the Sylvanias for nearly the price of one HiLux.

i know some people on here that would argue and they are some knowledgeable growers...

do you have any proof...or is all your opinioin merely hearsay. i HAVE done my research and if you take a look at the spectrums they are practically identical.

please provide some solid data/proof and not just blanket statements that im assuming are just regurgitated from other people.

I think a good number of people see a big price tag, and think "I've gotta have the best everything!" And they will tell you that it's the best, because if it wasn't, they just spent alot of money for nothing (and get no chics for free). Even if you can prove that your econo-bulb gave the same results, they'll still deny it. I spent the money for the hortilux bulbs this time... on my first grow... Was I a victim of hydro-store sellanomics? Maybe, maybe not. I'll tell you what. If the sylvania's are only $20? You bet your ass I'm giving em a try. And if they work? Cool! I just saved $100!

if your ok with the yield your plants get off a 20 dollar bulb more power to ya read the statistics eye is a leading lighting company period there is plenty of documentation out there to back up their products 130 dollar bulb that good for 4-5 harvests is worth it i have done my homework ill never use anything but eye bulbs im not here to sell their products just giving my input

i paid 95 for a sylvania lumalux ballast and the 20 bulb and my shit looks as good or better than all the other growers i know.

I'm not saying either way. But what I WILL do is try for myself, rather than basing everything on statistics. I know eye has more lumens, and a slightly better spectrum. My washburn HB35 is a replica of a $3,500 gibson. I'm fine with that.

Please show me this so-called homework you have done. i am assuming all your homework is just browsing threads seeing which brand is talked about most instead of any hard evidence. if this is not the case, then please prove me wrong! give me something! please refer back to the original post and see that the 2 spectrums are the same. the only difference is a measly 6000 lumens that is only 0.04% more lumens.

still your logic is since hilux is a big company, and their bulbs are more expensive then that means the light will give better yields. give me some HARD data besides fanboyism or whatever you want to call it. give me scientific reasons as to why sylvania bulbs are of lesser quality than hilux.

i bet you think AN is much better than say GH too...am i right? it makes me sick how so many people in this industry think that when a product is more $$ that youll get better results.

i dont mean to be a dick dude but cmon you're not showing me anything except the fact that product A is more expensive than product B therefor product A is better.

on top of that, it seems that the people who have actually tried these cheaper bulbs all agree that they can't tell any difference, and trust me the few people who said so here are not the only ones whom have claimed this. i am guessing you have never tried these.

i run a 6k garden....which makes more sense... spend:

6 x $120 = $720
or
6 x $20 = $120

i think ill take a savings of $600 and invest in another x2 1000w ballasts or save it for the electric bill!

but honestly, if you can prove that these more expensive bulbs will actually increase my yield by atleast 2 ounces then id consider them worth it.

ive noticed most people think more$=better, like these $200-400 autocloners which you could diy for about $30-40

but dont you know if you get those $200-$400 cloners that your yields will increase 10 fold?!!?

im not preaching anything if your happy with a 20 dollar bulb tear it up! all im saying is you get what you pay for

i actually think $20 is kinda high for $.10 of glass and $.25 of metal plus a couple cents worth of epoxy,
oh and dont forget the highly prized sodium

The best bulb you can get is the cheapest bulb in the correct light spectrum. Don't listen to people telling you to buy $120-$140 bulbs. In all likelihood the bulb is going to burn out or need replacement in 6-9 months. You should regularly be changing your bulbs anyway. I can't believe theirs a huge variance in bulb quality. From what I've read theirs only 4-5 manufactures of HID lighting. Everything else just gets rebranded. A lot of consumer products are made this way...LCD panels come to mind. LG, Samsung, Sharp, and Toshiba, and Westinghouse make all the panels on the market. Yet there is hundreds of brands out there.

Sylvania has been in the bulb making business for a long ass time. I'm sure it's a quality product. It's those really cheap bulbs you should be suspect of (i.e. $20-30 bulbs you see pop up on craigslist and ebay once and a while). Those I could see being cheap chinese knockoffs.

I own an eye. While it's nice, it's not 120 dollars nice.

I know this is an old trend but, I have a ton of exp on lighting. No stats, or bulb numbers. Just know what results I have seen in the past.

They are just not worth the cost. The Sylvania seem to burn out a tad faster, but im sure you will have the money to replace any that go out. They are outstanding!

And last Ronjohn7779 is 100% correct They have been making all sorts of lighting and have insane buying powering. Keeping a low over head like that can mean and in this case does, better prices.

i am gonna be honest the fact that anyone thinks the eye hotrilux bulb is worth it is easyly con'ed by flashy advertising, the store i bought my ballest and lighting kit from had the oppertunity to sell me on the most exspensive of everything, but the guy is a vetrin grower and had sympathy for my situation and also knew i had a good deal of knowledge on growing techniques becuase we talk all the time, he could have said by the hortilux and pocket more dough from me he knew i would have bought it if he told me to but he told me the truth, there is next to no real difference and definatly not enough difference to warrent all the extra money. he confinced me to go with the cheapest ballest he had and the cheapest quality light both products he him self use having the option to use whatever he wants cause he runs a hydroponic shop i got a full 400w hps lighting kit for 150$ canadian plus tax the ballest has a 3 year warrenty i brought it home tested it out the ballest run's super cool and completely quite and the light is super effective and bright i couldent be happier.

honestly don 't get fooled by compaines claming they have reinvented the wheel chances are they are just well dressed snake oil salesmen lookg for a few extra of your hard earned dollers and if you really must exsperiment with and extra spectrum go to a hardware store and buy a few extra t5's in blue spectrum and add them to your grow for 20 dollars youll end up with even more lumans then an extra 6000 to add to you grow and save a couple bucks in the process

I see this post through google by accident, I cannot help myself, I must make you clear.
I am from a China manufacture OEM bulbs for Sylvania and Philips. Let me tell you guys the different.





The above spectrum are 3 different 1000w HPS arc tube,
1. high lumen output HPS for lighting, I can make it with more than 160000lm if i want.
2. Philips master green power
3. improved by my self

Do you find any different only by compare the pictures? I show you the data by every wavelength, let compare the 1.high lumen and 2 Philips



left is high lumen right one is Philips, so just compare at 400nm-750nm, the red and bule light is much less than right one, insensitive green light is much more than right one. Which one is the real HPS grow light for hydroponic? of course Philips mastergreen, left one just for street lighting.

That's the different between 20$ and 134$

I design the 3. spectrum is better than Philips, but lumen only 120000lm. still need improve.
