SWC LED Bagseed - First Grow

This the first time grow log of someone I know who is in process of getting MMJ card. The plan is to have a mixture of mothers in a veg room while also vegging clones, and then have flower room that has something ready to harvest every month. More strains the better.

the emily's garden system seemed like such a good deal that 3 of them were purchased. only 2 are in use at the moment. every week or so something about the set up has changed but this is a written snapshot.

flower room - approx. 3x3 closet
1 x 300watt LED hanging on chains - gives a predominately pink/red light
3 x 15watt LED panels on the wall - gives mainly blue light
1 x emily's garden
1 x space heater when needed
1 x fan
1 x radio shack weather station remote temperature sensor

veg / clone / germ room - one part of a sliding door closet
1 x 50watt LED - gives a predominately pink/red light
1 x 15watt LED - gives mainly blue light
1 x emily's garden
1 x germination station with heat mat

4 Bagseed were germinated in Dec 09' with paper towel it took a week for some to pop. This was before germination station was purchased. Its from a mix of bagseeds collected over past 10 years or so, but theres a good chance at least one is 'Noma Coma. They were immediately put into rockwool cubes and into the emily's garden with 1/4 nute strength. Rinsing of the hydroton clay balls was forgotten and the res. has some sediment but hasn't been a problem.

Replaced with half strength nutes two weeks later. The slowest growing plant was removed for newbie reasons.

Plants were topped after the first set of 5 leafed leaves.

Another two weeks and it was full veg nutes for a month.

A germination station was purchased to start clones. after many ruined clones, it was learned that you cannot put a 15watt LED panel directly on the dome, even though LED produce almost no heat, it is enough to alter the humidity ( dry the hair ) above the clones and they will all die. Propping the LED up on the side of the station was enough to remedy the situation and changed clone rate to 100%.

About 2 months from seed and 12/12 was started, eventually leading to preflowering nutes in use currently after a month of 12/12 when pistils were showing. full flowering nutes seem too strong until there are actually full buds.

Also a bunch more seeds were germinated and were 12/12 from seed for about 2 weeks. Not liking the results of 12/12 from seed another emilys garden system was purchased and the seedlings were put into a 24/0 cycle.

I'll post all pictures of the grow in the next update.

So currently there is a flower room with 3 females starting to flower and about 2.5 feet tall and also 3 other plants who only got 1 week of 24/0 veg and haven't shown sex yet while being 12/12 for a month. temp stays at around 75 and humidity at 50%.

And the veg room with a germination station having clones from the females, and recently germinated 1 nirvana eldorado, 1 nirvana wonder woman, 3 nirvana freebies in rockwool. It also has the seedlings that were 12/12 from seed for about 2 weeks and now are under 24/0 in the emily's garden, along with fresh seedlings, all bagseed.

There's also 5 plants ( including a cloned fan leaf ) in a tub of soil mixed with some hydroton, also with 3 green onions for kicks. These are being grown near a window and placed outside when possible. Had too many plants and didn't want to kill them so just tossed them in there.

In some of the emily's garden 6" pots there were 4 seedlings put in the corners of one pot. Maybe it will work with no problems but its an experiment. A serious push of the limits of this 2 gallon SWC system.

Its crazy how much of a different indica grows than sativa and has been very interesting thing to watch and study.

There is no doubt LED by itself can produce amazing veg growth. Those blue LED's are a treat! I did a BUNCH of research last night and people get better growth with LED than MH.

When these LED were purchased not much care was given to the specs, but if more was known, care would taken to ensure 660nm in the reds. The lights with 660nm red are very much better than 630nm, especially for flowering.

Right now the veg room has 55 watt panel of this spec:
40 Blue Led light: 460nm to 470nm (nanometer) Wave Length
72 Red Led Light: 640nm to 650nm (nanometer) Wave Length

So 19 plants are attempting to be vegged under 55watt light and another dual band 15watt panel. The 15 watt is almost invisible compared to the 55 watt. They are all growing so it seems to be going OK! The 55 watt had to be raised about 5 feet off the ground to cover all the plants.

I'm fairly certain the 300watt is a tri-band being used to flower has 660's and 460's, and some orange.

The hairs are coming in nicely now. First time seeing a plant grow it is very interesting! One of these plants in veg, the last two photos, is growing with such small node spacing that I think its damaging itself. Nuts.

The 55 watt was like $100

4 15 watt was like $120

the 300 watt was around $500

all on ebay...hmm..then 3 emilys gardens is another $300....so about $1k invested ...didn't realize it was so much!

Well, I wouldn't recommend going 12/12 from seed unless you have a quick flower / auto flower. Some plants that were 12/12 1 week after veg and they haven't even shown sex 1 month of 12/12 what a waste of plants. I think a longer veg would have been better and they would have shown sex quicker.

also with the side lighting, fan leaves are bending themselves....crease and everything, so that one part is facing up and another part is facing sideways. It looks like the leaf was physically bent but its just growing that way now. Crazy!

I did that once but different it i had 600 watts placed side ways to the plant and it bented and was chasing the light.

I payed 350 for my 90 Watt UFO at my local hydro shop. Half of the lights went out on the first one I had. So I took it back to the shop and no questions asked ordered me up a next generation UFO brand new for nothin. The new one I got had NO orange spectrum in it like my last one. Only red and blue with infared flower enhancers. Even in the short time I had the old UFO, I could tell a difference between the new one and the old one. The new one kicks ass. Hopefully we will all see good results in the flower department!

LEDZep - not sure if your pun was intended in your name, but its nice! glad you enjoyed the trip and thanks!

UVB is essential to maximum THC production.

FOR UVB we need LED of the 310nm or 300nm variety.

I can't make sense of this:
http://www.roithner-laser.com/LED_UV_SEOUL.htm

I have some skills and could build a UVB LED panel, but I cannot figure out what their specs mean, so I emailed them.

If I can't it looks like the only smart thing would be to add a UVB via a reptile cfl, that would make me pissed because I want to see a full LED grow, so it won't be added!

So in the near future there definitely should be acquired a UVB LED panel somehow, and also to have a complete blue LED panels instead of the mixed to use in the flower room because these pure blue LED can be on 24/0 in flower without affecting the dark cycle!

"Make up of an ideal led panel:
2% UVB Leds for resin and tric production. 380mn
6% Royal Blue Leds 455mn
12% Blue Leds 470mn
30% Red Leds 627mn
50% Far Red leds 660mn" from gra.city - have not checked this math but seems ok for a dual purpose light, but I'm sure specialization of vegging vs flowering would create more efficiency. Especially since those 455nm and maybe 470nm could be on 24/7!

For reference:
UVB 315 nm–280 nm

380nm is actually Near UV or UVA - not the magically researched, beneficial to bud formation, and dangerous to humans - UVB

Maybe I'll start a business making these things if I can find a supplier  Eventually the magic formula for a led growroom will be created.

I believe UVB is the primary thing missing from damn near every economical LED panel, and that is what most people are using. Also theres about a thousand different ratios and dual band/tri-band/etc etc but none contain UVB!

Also, there are way too many variations of LED panels to compare them together.

I made a group! https://www.rollitup.org/groups/led-growers.html

Ha didn't even notice till you said something....Led Zepplin is the shit so I thought I'd represent a little.
Sounds like you've done your research on the LED thing, I might have gone that route had I read more. I got a lot of feedback from various reading that said you cant match the bud production from HID so thats the direction I chose. Plus, I was in a hurry... I will be in on this one to see how good those buds look!

picture update...5/6 are females....last one should show sex tomorrow or so

also vegging 19 plants with one 55watt led and one 15watt led seems to be actually working ok

damn i got some crazy night time droopiness

i'm going to finally switch to full bloom nutes tomorrow and add more veg nutes to veging plants...

i have just been topping off with water for well over a week, and now I'm going to top off with nutes.

more pictures iphone camera + pocket magnifier with built in LED from radio shack

so if this is only about a week into flowering, i would be estimating another 7 weeks of growth and then 2-3 plumping? that is almost double whats its grown already. i think i may run out of room in the rez, or it will be perfect.

that plant in picture #8 i dunno what is up with it, but its got the biggest root system and branch thickness of other plants started the same time

yes the #8 is only one plant!

and i cannot believe they are all female so far.

~2 more months till harvest i can barely wait for my first ever homegrown. the shitty part is i dont think i can veg those other plants for 2 months without space problems. damn over-eagerness. maybe i'll switch the plant and veg rooms and put another garden in flower with the most mature of the veg plants.

my plan was to have just 6 mothers in one of the gardens, all of different strains, with another garden in veg with 6f clones. and I would always have the flowering room with a garden of 6 plants maturing. its looking like the plants are needing 3 months under 12/12 to finish. So I'll always have 3 month old clones to put into veg. Hm..thats about right. root a clone takes a few weeks, and then veg. the clones will be vegging for 1 month more than I'd like but oh well.

right now ive got 5/6 females of bagseed flowering one still hasnt shown sex. Then I have freakin 19 plants vegging ( 4 feminized seed, 3 fem clones guaranteed fem, 12 bagseed ). Maybe I should buy one of those EBB & Gro systems with the 12 huge buckets, and another 300watt flower light.

But that would be $800 or so more and this would be growing way more than I want though since its personal, and 12 huge trees every 3 months is like..a little much.

gr...i germinated and planted too much, now i guess i can concentrate on not just cloning ANY female, but the BEST!

I just ordered a 12 site Ebb & Gro system. These emilys things are way too small. They are PERFECT for veg up to to the beginning week of flowering, and keeping a mother. Not so much for tree building, which is what I've decided to do.

I just picked up another 300 watt light, this time its only 660nm Red 460 Blue.

Once I get the Ebb&Grow setup I'll move the flower into an actual room and mount the two 300 watts from above. Then I'll put the biggest of my other plants into the main flower room as well. And its perfect for my legal limit ( 3 x 6 plants = 18 in emilys garden, 12 in ebb & grow = 30 = county limit )

So now I think i'll keep 12 different mothers ( already have 7 fems different strains ), always have 6 clones at least one month old, and be harvesting 6 plants every other month.

Comments / Questions appreciated. Please no LED vs HPS wars!

picture update. i love my neon nuggets. not bad for a single 2 gallon reservoir. tomorrow will be end of 1 week flowering.

actually its not a bad setup. I think even though I ordered the ebb & grow I'll keep growing in the emilys garden at least for these plants. Just to see what it can be.

I just bought a 400 watt MH/HPS combo. Maybe I'll do some 300 watt LED vs 400 watt MH/HPS and document it! But really I want to grow trees with 2x300 watt LED, 400 watt hps, and cfl uv-b. I just now need some c02 and it'll be perfect.

I had to change the air stones in the emilys garden flowering. The dual 3 inch air stones were crudded up from sediment. new airstones and theres tons more bubbles. I think this system will work for a full grow! I'll use the ebb&grow for the next round! I need to stop buying stuff....I'm just being impatient!

I am right behind you as far as flowering time, my babies have really taken off....I think you will get a lot less sretch using the HID light vs the LED lights. I got bushes compared to yours and I'm using a 250 watter, just a thought... check it out if you get a chance. Nice looking plants!

LEDZEP: For a reason of basically tight spaces I removed a bunch of lower growth. Also I made a bunch of failed cloning attempts. I cut a big portion of lower growth off. These are very bushy plants, i just thinned them out a lot.

I got my ebb & flo set up! My plants were basically root bound in that 2 inches of water bubbler set up.

It takes a bit of 2 hours of setup but after that, it looks like it will be a good system as long as everything works. There are a lot of parts that could go bad!

I know this isn't a DWC/Bubbleponics grow any more. I think I'll continue my grow in a new thread over there.

I will only keep the emilys gardens for mothers and veg. But swc grow log wouldn't be fun about vegging only, so it will be skipped.

OOOHH, that makes sense about the trimming...I like your new setup, I wish I had the space for that, you'll get much bigger plants with all that space, Nice!

it smells like bananas and hay what went wrong or will curing fix this??bongsmilie
