Supplemental LED bulb DIY

The days of CFls are coming close to an end with the introduction of LED bulbs into the market, so tonight I decided to add some supplemental LEDs to my grow and I thought I would share with you guys what I did. I got everything I needed for this project from hellmart for about $20 and it took me all of 30 mins. I really havent seen any threads for something similar so hopefully it can help someone.

Materials:
4 pack of 16w 2700k 1500 lumes led bulbs (4 x 16 = 64w)
4 bulb adapters
4 6ft extension cords
Zipties( i already had)

Just make sure that you are using materials rated for this application. Everything I used matches power and heat ratings that I would expect.

My 2 babies are flowering so thats why i got that temperature bulbs.

Step 1: Break and tear the domes off these LED bulbs. I smashed them with a hammer and then user come wire cutters to cut a hole and just tear it out. It is glued in so not hard at all to get them off.

Just Repeat the process for as many bulbs you plan on using.

Step 2: After removing all the globes i put the bulb inside of the socket and connected the socket to the extension plug. I used the side with one plug because I wanted to have top access to the other plug so that i could daisy chain them together. I used a zip tie to hold the cord as pictured below and it really keeps the bulbs balanced and straight down when hanging.

Repeat for all the bulbs that you are using.

Step 3: Hang the bulbs. you can use whatever you want but i used threaded wire because it gives a better grip on the cord but you can use zipties or whatever you want. And it might be hard to see but i daisy chained them all together, plugging the right closest corner to the farthest right corner to the left front corner and then to the back left corner and then out the tent to my power source. I have yet to find the right height to put them at because I just did did this but i just used the hand test and put them where I thought the plants would be comfortable yet getting the best light possible. They are very bright and for every little inch that my chinese led and cfls cant reach now will get light.

With all my lights on :)

Comments and criticism are most definitely welcome.

I just pop the tops off with a flat screwdriver and they are still in perfect condition. Wife is trying to figure out some little craft thingy she can make with them. :)

I made this unit out of some vanity fixtures I scored cheap at a thrift store a few years back. Knew they had potential. All the bulbs are on 6" centers from each other.

All but the two orange 2700K ones are 5000K. Buck a bulb so bought 3 dozen.

Shiny! :)

Right..great time to post this TY TY
Ive ordered a small veg tent, its just a little 50cm x 50cm x 100cm. I have a 130w cfl globe for winter but I thought of something like this for summer (I'm in summer atm) any chance of a pic of the back? Have you just daisy chained these into an extension lead somehow? Any info appreciated.

No prob.

I thought I'd written this up in my journal but I guess not.

I just mounted the plates onto a couple of pieces of aluminum angle iron with some well placed holes and some short self-tapping sheet metal screws. Laid everything out so all the bulbs are on 6" centers which is how far they are apart on each 3 or 4 bulb strip. Drilled holes in each top corner of the angle iron and attached light, twisted wire chain to hang them with.

I'm just using 9W LEDs because they had a promotion recently and I got 3 dozen for a buck a bulb. Replaced a lot of the CFLs in the house too. Now I got a bunch of CFLs I don't want but they come in handy for lighting up a male branch in a glass of water in a closet so I can collect some pollen for chucking or start some clones etc.

The back view.

A little close up of the wiring. I didn't use the copper ground wires and just used the power cord ground wire, (green), by putting a crimp-on ring to anchor to the backplate with a screw. I used marrettes that have the brass collar with a set-screw to securely hold all the power and neutral wires then screw into the cap.

Very simple and made me glad I worked for an old German guy for 4 years for not a lot of money but a lot of beer and education in his nicely equipped small machine shop. Apprenticed in Germany after WWII and really knew his shit. Taught me how to run everything at least a good basic level. I was already doing all the welding and small engine repair for the portable rebar benders he invented back in the 60s when he owned a 60 man shop cranking them out in Vancouver. Most of it was refurbishing old ones and that was very educational. We built a few new ones and made one specifically for a fireplace company to bend square tubing to be used in their heatalator gas airtights. Quite the learning process as he designed the dies to bend the 2" square, mild steel tubing within the required specs without stretching the metal too much as it would get thin and possibly corrode out earlier.

That's all there is too it.

To be honest I spent about 10 mins with one and a screwdriver and I couldnt pop it off. I used a cheaper bulb and yea it pops right off. But great setup. I really like how you used the fixtures and nice wiring job. I'm going to probably start working on a similar fixture or grid and see what they'll do for a small grow box.

I basically built it to veg one Rubbermaid tub for DWC. Why burn a 400W MH when 99W of cheap LED should do fine for that until they get big enough to use the extra power from the MH. Power is 23.5¢/kwh here and the most expensive part of my growing.

O gotta wedge the tip of the screw driver in a couple of spots then just twist and the tops come off easy. Seems like some silicon glue or something holding them on. Different brands likely have different ways to attach the globes too. The higher power bulbs aren't so cheap tho like with CFLs where the larger ones are quite expensive.

Rubbermaid tub grow sounds pretty sweet to me. How did it turn out? And your right, smashing with a hammer and tearing the plastic off was a shitty way to do that. I got caught up in the moment and I was flying through those bulbs globes, smash tear smash tear...lol and I will need to edit that because alot of the LED bulbs have plastic bases unlike these ones with metal bases and I wouldn't want people hurting themselves or breaking the bulbs

That was one method proposed when I posted a thread a while back asking folks in the LED forums how to do it. I tried a propane torch to kind of warp the bulb and then pry it off and that worked then just sat in my chair and put the bulb on the chair between my legs so it didn't move and wedged the tip in. 1.2" thin blade tip. Gotta be careful not to jam it in too hard and bust one of the chips. I used liquid electrical tape on the two prongs sticking up in the middle as a buddy said they give a nasty shock. Now that I'm using the bulbs that seems to melt a bit so may not be so effective. :)

Here's the globe I heated up. Popped it off and it was full of bud! Who knew? ;)

With the black goo on the tips of those wires. I wrote 50 on the 5000K and 27 on the 2700K so it's easier to see who's who.

Put some two and three way splitters in there !

Better yet, get some efficient Quantum boards or COBS

Nothing more ghetto than growing weed with great value bulbs, literally they are the walmart of grow lighting.
I use their distilled water as well, must mean I got a ghetto grow, with some big ghetto nugs. But honestly this is a quick project that was meant to be cheap. Trying something out. And as far as the leds and driver circuits not too big a difference than any other bulb made in China. Lower quality components but you get what you pay for.

This was just a little side project I'd been thinking about doing with CFLs then real cheap LEDs popped up and I went with them. Splitters will shoot the light off to the side and I don't want that.

I have 1-1000W MH, 1-100W MH/HPS, 3-400W HPS, 1 400W MH and a couple 150w HPS lights. All old magnetics I like just fine. With the Hortilux bulbs I use they kick LED ass man. ;)

More than I need now even once I get my new 8x4 grow room built. I'll use a 1000w on my 6'6" Light Rail 4.0®.

If I switched over to expensive LED COBs or whatever I wouldn't live long enough to make back my upfront costs in power savings so don't bother going there. I'm old and not all that healthy. 20 min ago I just traded an oz of bud for 11lbs of nicely cured leaf tobacco so I guess quitting in the new year is off the table. :D All organic and pesticide free so a lot healthier than the commercial shit I've been rolling for the last few years. That much tobacco would have cost over $3000 here in Canukistan so I got a hell of deal. I tossed in a $7 Meditainer with built in grinder to sweeten the deal.

Well well well ... Now that is a fixture on the cheap ! ... Built in reflective surfaces and ready to go ... Excellent .... Curious on plant performance with that beauty.

i've been moving over the led bulbs too. They seem to work really great. I'm flowering with just 1 100watt equiv 3000k bulb right now, i've got another started flower under a 60watt equiv
LED bulbs are we're it's at. Not only are they more efficient (more lumens per watt), they last longer than cfl tech, and they are relatively cheap.

Pretty sharp eh and cost me less than $20 bulbs and all. :)

Just have it sitting on a chair with 7 bulbs in it shining onto my small veg plants sitting under 4 - 4" T-12s with a 3 bulb fixture also aimed in there. Hitting the 7 node stage and liking all the extra light.

I'll be trying it over a DWC tub of plants soon and see how it vegs those. Will likely post something in my meandering grow thread.
