Supercropping(+) for Beginners

This is BNFN - By noobs for noobs : not a lesson, but a compilation of my research

This is a NOOB thread guys so dont tell the advanced techniques, but i will add links to what i can find if you want to see for yourselves.
(no pics or vids on here are mine, its chump season)

My definition : supercropping - manipulating the plant to keep from waisting any floorspace/light for environments with limited spacing/lighting
There are many different things that full under supercropping which include
1. Crimping
2. Bending
3. LST
3b. ScrOG
4. Topping
4b. FIMing

1. Crimping
What it does : Makes your plant more bushy
How to do it : Pinch the stem at the top between nodes. (no fingernails, were not topping it)
Why does this work : What happens when you pinch the stem, you crush (thinking of the plant as a human) its blood flow, to the top of the plant and focuses the plant on growing the stem stronger, and promoting growth in the lower branches.
The negatives : You have to give it time to recover

from the thread : Explain crimping please by : BigGuyTok'n
But about crimping. I have done this to a Fimd DSD mother which was also tied down for a good period of time and had AMAZING results.

What you do is just take some pliers if its older and really thick and crush the main branch below the buds. Its the same with younger plants or stems but you just use your fingers.

The result is slightly slowed growth but it makes your stems HUGE, like really thick.

2. Bending
What it does : Gets the plant more light (lower branches)
How to do it : Bend the stem to the side
Why does this work : Plants naturally bend towards the light, this is why plants grow vertically, towards the sun. But if you bend the stem horizontally, the lower branches will recieve more light and will have larger colas when in flowering.
The negatives : You manhandle your plant

from the thread : bending by : freeskier
Carefully pull down the branches of your cannabis plant, or the whole plant, tye them down.
:leaf:
You are now forcing them to grow horizontally. Tthe nodes will start producing branches or buds that grow straight up. Bending should be done gradually to avoid pinching or snapping the stem. Use soft hemp string or cloth to secure the branch or stem loosely when tying down to minimize damage to the soft stems. Growth is slowed for awhile as the cannabis plant adjusts to the shock of being bent. This is a good technique to maximize space in a small grow room. :weed:
(as a side note, he was mixing bending and LST, just do that minus the tying it down if you're just bending and not LSTing)

3.LST or Low Stress Training
What it does : Same as bending except permanent.
How to do it : After you bend the stem down, tie it down to the pot (or w/e else is there and stationary)
Why does this work : Same as above
The negatives : Same as above, plus it's abit time consuming
thanks to SiRbUdZaLoT for the nice vid

3b. ScrOG or Screen of Green
What it does : Same as above HIGHER YIELD
How to do it : Put a screen above your plant and keep tucking it back under the screen when it tries to grow through
Why does this work : Same same same same
The Negatives : Hard to move, takes knowledge, and advanced planning (honestly prob not best for noobs)
from the thread: ScrOG grow by : mogie
What I like to do is give my plant a head start, by pre training the main stock horizontally. This has two real benefits, the main stock is not affected by the installation of the screen (training your plant horizontally to 90 degrees, really helps when you have a real fat stock), and the growth tips start growing/stretching upwards so they are very close to, or are penetrating the screen when the screen is installed
4. Topping
What it does : Gets you more than one main cola
How to do it : cut your tip off of your plant
Why does this work : Hormones and stuff i cannot explain (see link)
The negatives : Long recovery time
Anything that this man, Uncle Ben, says listen to him. He's a genious

4b. FIMing (F**k i missed...ing)
What it does : Produces multiple bud sites
How to do it : Same as above, but you only cut off half of the tip
Why does this work : Same as above but since you're cutting so close to where the next set of leaves would grow you should get possibly more than two main colas
The negatives : Difficult, time consuming, plus high risk of faliure (also prob not for noobs unless you actually say "F**K I MISSED" when you try to top it)
from the thread : Fimming and Topping 101 by : mogie
FIMMING A PLANT!

Fimming is actually no different that topping, what fimming does is virtually the exact same thing only your leaving part of the new growth. This only takes of part of the new growth and actually topping the very very new growth which is very hard to see.

What this ends up doing is making it seem as if your getting 4 new tops right next to eachother when its actually only 2 at the very top (like topping) but since it was cut so closely to the next newest set of fanleaves 2 branches which would have formed there anyways seems to make it look like there is 4 new tops.

This is how you go about doing this.

1. Locate the very top of the new growth

2. With a clean sterilized scissors, Fold the fan leafs over and cut approximately 80% of the new growth off the plant.

3. View from the top showing the Cut

4. View of the Cut section after 2 days growth, showing the 4 new growth shoots (branches)

Thats IT!!!! you should be well on your way to Topping and Fimming of your plants.

AND I KNOW THERE IS SOME CONFUSION AND NO REAL ANSWERS ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOPPING AND FIMMING SO I FOUND THIS AWESOME PIC FROM THEGROWERY.ORG

BOUNS #5 SoG (Sea of Green)
What it does : You can grow many, smaller plants, under less light.
How to do it : Use small pots and many plants close together under light
Why does this work : Elementary, please dont make me explain
The Negatives : High plant count, and time consuming

"The idea behind smaller SoG grows is to get bud from the soil to the tip of the plant. This is a strain-dependent characteristic, but is often a desired one from SoG growers.
SoG is great for some who want variety and a bunch of colas sitting in their flowering chamber. However, the small size and number of plants is just too troublesome for some."
Thank you furrowedbrow from thegrowery.org

Sorry this kind of turned into a training guide for noobs instead of just supercropping but i figured i'd throw SoG in there because it is often lumped in there with ScrOG. I hope this can help and any questions you have I will try to help, but you have to remember that at the moment, I too am new to this. If you have anything that you think I should add, PM me please and i will add it promptly. Thanks to all who I got info, links, pics and vids from!

You did a great job here GKZ... this would be a great addition to the 'revised' simple thread. I can tell you put some time and effort into this! Very nicely done!

this thread should clear up a lot of the guesswork that we encounter when using" techniques" to grow our weed, very imformitive and well done, thanks!

Heres my baby, orange bud about 4-5 weeks in. i had to trim leaves you can see earlier pics in my journal or on pages 360-366 of irish growe25022011325.jpgrs thread. as you can see i topped this as per uncle bens topping guide. whats the best way to train this as you can see i am limited on height.25022011328.jpg

lotus - id suggest you go for lst so your bottom branches can get light aswell, but only do that if you have the horizontal space to grow, just remember you have to retie your stings every once and awhile so they dont cut the plant

the box i have them in is about 16" wide. the plant is 8ish inches high. so, will i tie the whole stem down or just the sidebranches?
