Sun Systems Ballast: Glass insert or no?

So I have a Sun Systems 2 and currently it has the glass insert installed. Any pros/cons besides protecting my plans if the bulb explodes? Should I take it off for any reason?

If you are not having any heating issues I would take it off.

If your not going to use the reflector for what it was designed for, it makes no diffrence if the glass is on or off.
If you want to have an efficent setup, pull cool air threw the reflector with an inline fan, and exhaust the hot air out of the grow space . That way you can keep the reflector inches away from the top of the plants. Thats what that reflector was disigned for.

What do you mean what the reflector was designed for? It's for shining light downwards and that's what its doing. I have exhaust and it keeps the canopy below 75 right now. And why would I want it inches from the top? There is such a thing as "light burn".

I'm looking for any negatives to having the glass on such as, light penetrating it, etc. Temp is not an issue.

what do you mean light burn i have my plants touching the glass on the same system and they dont burn the point of that system is to air cool and get the light as close to the plants as possible if not no u dont need the glass at all it is just going to make more lumens lost than needed

I guess you should make your posts a little more specific. But yes, that reflector was designed with sealed glass and air cooled fittings for a specific purpose. not only to shine light downwards.
And yes inches. you always want to run the light as close as possible to the tops of plants without burning them. The closer the better. Your trying to simulate the sun the best you can.
Light burn, whatever. You cant burn anything with light. you have to have heat to burn anything. You can get light bleaching, but thats a compleatly different thing than burning.

If your not going to air cool the lights, then remove the glass, pack it up. Place the glass where you can easily get too it, so you can put it back on if you incur high temps. The glass on the shade reduces the amount of light the plants receive. What size is the light? What are the room dimensions?

I'm still wondering what this has to do with the ballast...

The glass is there to help keep your grow air either separate from or vented through your light hood to keep your room temperature down.

I use my hood to vent my 600W HPS and grow area.
