Im not a biologist but from what I understand, the sugar molecule is too large for the plant to take in. I was reading a thread by a guy who was talking about this subject because he believes all of the sweeteners on the market. He believes that the stuff that claims to have natural sugar cane wont work as good as black strap molasses. Good Luck Dude

Table sugar is refined sucrose. Blackstrap molasses is the final by-product of sucrose refining; it is what remains after cane juice has been boiled three times and most of the sucrose has been precipitated out.

What's left contains significant amounts of potassium and minerals, as well as carbohydrates, mainly simple sugars (glucose, fructose) and sucrose. Blackstrap is better than refined table sugar, microbes also require minerals for growth.
