So i' am thinking about growing just a single plant. Curious how bad the smell will be outside I live in a wood type neighborhood. Was also thinking of growing some actual herbs that might knock down some of the smell.

I have a single plant nearing maturity and it doesn't smell much at all. It depends a lot on the strain, stay away from strains that list strong odor as a characteristic. I think it will not smell beyond the room you have it in. There are also fans with carbon filters in them and other products to get rid of smell. I have heard eucalyptus is a good odor killer.

The smell from plants only really gets noticeable once your in flowering - and even then it'll be a faint smell. The only way you'll have a plant STINKING is if you [or maybe a fan if your growing inside] moves the plant which in turn breaks some trichomes. They are what realeases the smell. The stems stink too if you touch them. But as all growers know, you shouldnt touch the trichomes, and therefore you should make much of a smell. Although some strains do smell more than others - and some smell so fruity you wouldnt actually know it's cannabis, apart from the looks.

Smell depends heavily on the strain, but if you are thinking of growing anything then the proper precautions should always be taken. The beauty of a small grow is that you will not need many precautions. Perhaps just an air freshener. Be safe and enjoy your buds.
