stem rot?

stem rot?

jiffys in rockwool cubes on slabs, i was watering the cubes every 2-3 days by hand but the jiffys hold more water then the cubes and have been staying wet.

it has been 3 days since the cubes went onto the slabs and the slabs are still pretty moist... jiffys are still moist too, next watering will be only the slabs with drip system to try and keep the upper root area dryer...

this is on about 10 out of 100 clones... do you think it will heal by drying out? do you think its mold spores and contagious? i already know about pythium etc.... i use hygrozyme, i dont recirculate my res...

anyone have any similar experiences.suggestions.ideas?

im drying out the jiffys as much as possible....... however im wondering if this is pointless and i should just toss the bad plants? the brown/black area on the stems are dry more like they would crack from plant weight then tip over from being mushy......

I am not experienced in stem rot. It looks like thats what you got though. ..maybe root rot too?

I would take clones and continue to dry them out until someone with experience helps out. ...ohh I would also search here and on the web on how to stem rot.

i just noticed one of them has allot of white moldy growth in the jiffy......

I guess you may of figured the cause is probably to much water. I hope you can recover.

If you continue to try and get these to recover you may consider chop'n big leaves so it can focus on the weak stem.

Course wait'n for more help would be a good idea also.

If you decide to clone it looks like you would only be able to chop the plant once above the rot and cut back leaves. Maybe you could make 2 clones if its long enough to chop in half?

definately stem rot. it will be beyond saving now!


I hate jiffy pellets , i use coco pellets or rockwool starter cubes. Alot less problematic .

so ive gotten a better picture of the worst one... about 30 of 100 clones are like this, unfortunatly i can only get my clones in jiffys, thats how they come. so this is not treatable fixable by drying out or using certain fungicides etc?

I have sprayed all infected areas with 3%hydrogen peroxide.... hopefully this will kill the rot!

Depressing Day. I would just take back to the vendor like WTF

the clones come from about 10 hours away, unfortunately taking back to the vendor is not an option, they have all grown quite a bit and I have enough material to make new clones if I must.... i dont think this is pythium or root rot, I think its just stem rot caused by too much moisture in the jiffys, hopefully the h202 will dry out the rot and give these little stems a chance!!

I was just think'n an ISO/water spray is an other alternative. ...cheaper and I think a bit safer.

just thought id give an update..... been about a week since the problem has been corrected, we lost about 50 out of 200 plants..... the rest are recovering quickly and growing fast!

The solution that seemed to work for us was 25 drops of ridomyl in our 80 litre rez x2 applications, and spraying the rotting stems with h2o2.... most of them recovered with about a weeks worth of downtime...

Maybe next time you should bake your jiffy's, if that's possible to ensure that they are not carrying anything harmful to the plant. This problem can also be caused by putting them under the hps before they are actually ready. Plant rot often occures in plants that are grown in rockwool slab. I learned that a small rockwool cube for rooting in a table of crushed lava rock works just fine and I never get rot. I would abandon the rockwool slabs to eliminate this problem.
