OK ive finally made up my mind on what im going to do. I plan to grow in a stealth box that i made. The box is 3 feet tall by 20 inches wide by 20 inches long. My plan is to grow 4 lowryder strain plants in this box using a 400 W hps light. with reflector of course. I plan to cut two 6 inch circles on both sides of the box wiht a intake and outake fan in them. I also plan to run a 6 in. duct out of the side of the reflector with another intake or outake fan? which would be better for that intake or outake? my only concern is, is that light gonna be to hot for this box? do i have to worry about a fire.. any help would be appreciated. thank you

outtake should be bigger or twice as big as the intake

That's a bit small of a grow box. Consider the smallest reflectors are around 6 inches tall, leaving at least 4 to 5 inches from the top of the box to avoid fire. Also, it's recommended that you keep a 400w light 12 to 24 inches from the canopy of your plant. That's two or more feet off of your plant alread, and then the container your growing the plants in should be at least 8 inches deep, leaving you with NO grow room. I suggest putting more time into it, it's worth the wait and it ensures safety. I'm sure you could find an easy way to extend the box, after all, it's just a box.

Yeah, with cfls you can pretty much touch the light to the plant without hurting it, which I don't suggest, but as an example of how cool they burn. With CFLs you'll get a box full of plant, but not very quality buds.

how far away should the light be kept away if its a 250w hps with and inline fan cooling the reflector 80 cfm exaust of the reflector.

Try growing using a screen of green, train your plant through wire mesh, so you train a thick layer of buds.
I would highly recommend using CFL also, and If you can spare the height increase by another foot minimum.
Has any one got any pics of a screen of green to help me explain this point better?

Screen of Green would be good in that setup. There is one problem you would need to make a different screen for each plant. It will be a pain to unweave the males out. This is only if you are growing from seed ofcourse. Since your plan is to grow LR you will not be able to clone and flower that clone to find out sex prior to flowering the mother plant. If you go with a different strain then you could do this. If you are stuck on using LR then I would sugest that you research LST. This type of growing if doen properly will give you the same effects of SCROG without the hassle of unweaving the males from a screen. Check out my grow setup it is very similar to what you are working with.https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/23121-week-3-flowering.html

im thinking 3' is too small for any type of flowering. 6" minimun for the fixture/bulb and 8-12" for the container takes HALF of your total height. If the bulbs are literally touching the tops of the plants you get at BEST 18" tall plants. Plants will nearly triple their height from vegging thru flowering so you'd have to start flowering them at around 6" max or try prunning a 12" vegged plant to keep it under 18" tall which would stress it too much. Only chance in this short of a room would be to take 1 plant and keep the branches tied or weighted down and spread around the inside.

Too say 36in is too short to flower in any style is incorrect. If you grow from clone then you could even do a SOG if you flower soon after it roots. Scrog would work and you even said that is can be done LST as well. I am currently growing in a cab that is 36in tall with one plant LSTd and I have plenty of height about another 9 inches to spare and it is week 4 of flower. My limitation is the floor size this is the only reason that I have one plant instead of two.

Drew,
SCROG is a faily simple idea. You have a screen with 2"x2" holes in it that you set at a desired height and then train the plant underneith the screen untill it fills up then just let it grow through. Above the screen is an even canopy of budds and below is useless. I hope I have helped you understand the SCROG method.
