I start a new job tomorrow, with an oil field Casing company. Until now, I've only worked on drilling rigs in the North Dakota Bakken...took home anywhere from $2,400 a week to $3,200 (after taxes). For those who don't know, casing is the pipe that goes in the ground after the hole is drilled. It's what wireline crews perforate the sides of, loading dynamite into the rock and blow up to expand, before the frac crews come in and pump high pressure/volume of sand/water and chemicals to expand the crevices for the oil to pour into the well bore. Anyway, my stand-by pay is $24/hour (this includes travelling out to well sites and time spent waiting to work on site) and I'll make $0.05 per foot. In other words, average well depth in ND is 16,000 feet, so I'll average $750 per well, which is done in about 14 or 15 hours. I'm hoping to case at least a good 60k feet of wells per week, grossing at least $3k. The tough part about this job is that I'm on-call 24/7 with no designated schedule or days off...and the redeeming part is that there's potential to make a lot of money (boss whom hired me estimated 90 hr work weeks)...judging from a few guys I've talked to, more money than I made on drilling rigs...we shall see...
