Spinal cord injury

I broke my back 15 years ago skiing, I can walk and everything, but there's pain in my back, and in parts of my legs from nerve damage. For the longest time I got by with Tylenol 3, Percocet, etc., but I've been developing an intolerance to those the last few months, to the point where the itchiness that comes with those is just too much!

And so, my doctor suggested I try weed.

He gave me a Nabilone prescription, but said "some people" just grow their own weed because it's much, much cheaper (and few drug companies in Canada--if any--will cover marijuana.) He also said the nearest dispensary to Calgary is in BC. I haven't filled the Nabilone yet, just got some weed from a friend.

So far it's been hard to tell how well it's working. It definately helps with sleeping, and I think it helps with the nerve pain, but I can't walk around stoned all day; I have to, like, y'know, go to work. So I only smoke it in the evening and before bed. Plus I really don't like smoking, so I think I'll get a vaporizer when my first crop is read (which only germinated a month ago).

It's been interesting to read other people's experiences.

I feel for ya brother , i was in an explosion over 20 years ago & on top of 12% of my body being covered in 3rd degree burns i also broke my back , multiple crushed vertibre & ruptured, torn & herniated discs & damaged the dural sak on my spinal cord , my left leg feels like its electric with pain 24/7 , i get pain so intense where sometimes when i stand up & the weight of my body comes to bear i loose bladder control & piss myself, or have projectile vommit from the pain .

For me & my pain levels no weed will do anything about lowering pain levels & i must take a minimum of 80mg oxycontin & 8mg dilaudid daily , thats on my good days the bad days i take up to 3 x the amounts , what pot does for me is to help the muscles relax & takes away some of the throb in the leg pain , it also helps with the itchy shit where ya want to scratch all over ya itch so bad , indica heavy strains work best for me & my wife .

My wife has RA MS which is an agressive form of Multiple Sclerosis & she has severe neuropathic pain as we do , she has an intollerance for opiates & even a weak 30mg roxycodone will knock her out so she prefers weed , i grow her 2 specific strains for her pain , she uses Blue Widdow & Sour Diesel, she too dislikes smoking & prefers vaping or using Medibles , i make her breakfast lunch & dinner & put from 1/4 gram of keif or hash to a 1/2 gram in her meals & it really helps her pain levels & comfort level .

We have a full time house keeper who is an excellent baker & she loves my wife so she routinely makes her all sorts of different baked treats , then after the treats are cool & ready to be frosted she gets hash from our stash & mixes it in with the frosting , a dozen brownies will be laced with 6 to 12 grams of hash so 1 brownie usually does her pretty well .
Try vaping in small amounts along with your prescribed meds & see if it helps with the itchy scratchy feeling opiates give off .

I wish you luck my friend , ive been living the nightmare for over 2 decades now & ive learned it takes a combo of pot & narcotics for me to lead any kind of quality life .

I am sorry to hear this. I have a bad back and serious head injury. I was on 120 mg/day of Morphine Sulphate. As the pain changed from somatic to neuropathic the opiates became less effective. I transitioned completely from opiates to Cannabis 4/29/2013.

I have to take fairly large amounts of edibles. I do take Marinol/Nabilone (synthetic THC), on occasion. It actually does help but it feels terrible and will occasionally give me a headache. So I went to extracts in the form of edibles. They have their own unique issues but over all they work better than opiates. The short term memory loss is an issue for me but the pain relief works.

With chronic pain you'll never get rid of it completely, you need just enough to make it tolerable. Finding that balance takes some time and experimentation. Essentially I am aware I'm in pain but it isn't requiring my complete focus to not scream.

If your pain control physician will work with you I would encourage you to ask for plain Codeine or Morphine Sulphate, immediate release, to get through work, and take a vacation from the Tylenol. You might find that will help you. Try not to get on a sustained release form of opiates as it makes getting off that much tougher.

Anyway that's my experience, hth,
Annie

Wow, guys (and of course, C2G), I'm not going to complain about my lower back pain that I get occasionally. Nothing at all like what you all go through.

Can you still grow your own in canada? If you can grow your own because buying it is expensive and the massed produced shit is 9 times out of 10 trash. I recommend making oils and extracts you can make some cannabis extract pills. My brownies always loosen me up pretty good, the back pain is still there but I don't notice it as much. I think it will help if you eat it especially if you don't smoke. Google the hell out of vapes read every review and ask rollitup chances are somebody has tried it. Some are junk some aren't make sure you ask I'm sure riu has a subforum for it.
