certain kinds of mites change color depending on age of infestation. Red means they have been there a while. I've found azamax to be very effective and you can apply it in a couple of different ways. Good luck. They are hard to get rid of...I also recommend Dr Doom fogger.

Just to reply to the question spider mites come in many different colours, and there are different species, the red mite is quite common, then there the two spot mite which is most common, black with whiteish yellow spots near the head, but mites also come in grey, brown, white, and yellow.
I dont know if you can find the stuff but I tryed this stuff the other day and wow.. kills adults and eggs dead and is completely safe for plants, well so far as I can tell, its DYN-A-MITE F1 anti stress Folia Spray, was quite expensive but seems to of killed all the mites I had in one go,, anyhow good luck and dont forget to change the environment to slow the bastards down,
so raise the humidty and lower the temp to help your spray/fogger to kill them. I think if you can take temp below 60F and raise humility it will slow them down.. anyhow good luck and take it easy,
