max i can get with the new chips using citi simulator (wont let you operate outside of acceptable Tj):

1825 : 522W max on 1825@8750 mA/ 79C Tc
3618 : 778W max on 3618@6300 mA/ 32C Tc

youd most likely need watercooling to get close to 800W out of it

im not sure where they get 837W on the datasheet from, that math doesnt add up with voltage at max 6300 mA current

Since we are talking about spectra, has anyone seen this page? Not sure if this is something thats going to be released, or is already available or what exactly. Also anyone know much about the horticulture cobs being developed? Big step up from standard whites?

Would be interesting to know the price on one of those. I dont see them available anywhere... Not really useful except for warehouse grows with fairly high ceilings Im thinking. Must be a market for them if they are being developed tho.

passive is a whack o aluminum

active is cheap, way smaller sink..cools the chip more..and moves air..

those big passive heat sinks look like Red Dwarf

it all depends on the efficacy. peopel have used blurples for a long time but went to whites primarily for efficiency. if these use the new high efficiency reds they may be better than whites.

most people i see augmenting with reds are using a predominantly white spectrum. there are other lights that are predomiantly blurple with a little white (california lightworks comes to mind

so its been done, it all depends on the efficacy. at the end of the day, umol/J is still king

If it could cool like 750w it would probably be a direct replacement for 1000w de kinda like the spectrum king but probably stupid expensive. Also greenhouse could use something like this for supplemental lighting.

i just got samples of the new high-current citis in 1212, 1818, and 1825

if the datasheets/simulators are correct the high current 1212s are almost as efficient as the gen6 1818s at a given wattage (which will put them right there with the luminus cxm22 gen3). if they can keep the pricing on the new 1212s close to the old ones that will be a big deal imo

i wouldnt say comeback... they are really the same tech and for DIYers are currently both very similar in terms of cost per watt at a given efficiency

almost every breakthrough (yield, die efficacy, durability, phosphor, thermal dissipation) benefits both techs

what is the flavor of the month in DIY world is neither here nor there. spread out individual diodes will always have an advantage in heat dissipation, cobs will always have an advantage in lumen density

cobs are going to make a comeback and be more popular than the pcb soon
Bridgelux will probably drop a new gen soon as well. It seems that there has been more interest in COB manufactures for creating white phosphor with a horticultural related spectrum compared to mid power diode manufactures. Maybe we will see a horti COB with good efficiency soon.

Yeah I think there market research has probably seen a large increase in small quantity orders from there distributors Digikey, Future electronics, Cutter, etc. compared to huge orders from
citi-municipalities, Airpots, warehousing etc. They are staring to put the pieces together and realize there is a good market they have been paying little attention to.

Yeah, i cant even imagine what COBs are actually meant to be used for. I know the samsung strips n shit are put in all kinds of light fixtures, but a COB wouldnt make a very good normal light I wouldnt think, it's too bright and small. I mean maybe it is used for high bay warehouse lighting, but even then I'd kind of be surprised.

It was invented to replace HPS and MH in industrial highbay/lowbay applications.
