When I was more enthusiast of new tech than I am today, I used to feel frustrated when I put good money on a product and a few weeks/months later a new model was launched and my version of the product automatically lost 50% or more of the value I paid. I'm afraid the same would happen if I paid too much for a COB.
How would you even quantify such a thing.... :P

What you stated is not accurate. I think this discussion has more to gain if we look at the possibilities more analytically.

Here you go bud, 1 plant, topped,lst'ed, vegged for 8 weeks. 10-15 days left in flower.330+ watts of numerous cfl's within or less than an inch of all tops. 95.57$ is what i payed for 3 months of cfl's. Looks like i will get 20-30g dry idk but definetly not worth the 100$ i spent on electric and 4 months of my time constanly moving cfl's. Switched to an hps instead because im that guy that buys an ounce for 260 instead of a half for 150. Our avg price is 180/320 for a half or ounce that was shipped here illegally. 150/260 is what i pay for local indoor from friends.
Our grams are 20, our eights are 60 even our quarters are 120. I still think its a little expensive. Especially after hittin up dispensaries in cali. 80$ for a quarter of knock yo ass shit

I had to do it for the sake of COB curiosity :) The cost was not unreasonable ~$425 for up to 140W lamp, but I did replace LEDs that were perfectly good (~45% efficient) so that's the worst thing about it.

Running them at 200mA (13W ea) most of the time, 70% efficient, 227lm/W heatsinks are at room temp. Using DIY reflectors. They can be dimmed to about 100mA and still get decent growth or boosted to 370mA to get very rapid growth. At 200mA the growth is bigger and better than ever before and using less power ~86W from the wall to cover 14 ft² or about 4 PAR W/ft².

If you google for "SMD3528 vs SMD5630" it doesn't look good. Based upon the information on that page, they're ~85lm/w. Similar product pages for 5630/5730 say 110-130lm/w. I don't think you can trust these pages for no-name discount strips. But, that corresponds to the comparisons you'll find if you google. Yesterday it times to come looking for something on new SMD5630...

Samsung's latest 5630 (LM561B)can reach 167lm / w @ 65mA
and Seoul Semiconductors 5630 even 180lm / w at 50mA both in 5k. Get these numbers from digikey.
These are great numbers for a mid power LED! Especially if you look at 90+CRI numbers!
136lm/w in 4k seems to be a good choice for plant growing. But how to find stripes with it, Lol?

I have made a few pictures from my simple 1mm alu-sheet only 20" x 14".
There are 10 strings, 3-4ft long connected in parallel and the driver have 12V/12A.
Half is coolwhite, 450 LED's, 90w, the other half is warm white, 300 LEDs, 72w. If I drive them at full power they need 136w from the wall.
Undimmed at full 136w the backsite of the sheet reaches 55-60°C, but if I put the temperature sensor direct on the phosphor I get only 45°C.
At a distance of 8" I get 30-32.000lx in the middle and 20-24.000 in the margin. 4" outside but with the same distance there are only 10.000lx.
The minimum distance should be at least 4-8" with this power , because at lower distances I get bleachings. Also the leaves are thick and leathery because of the intense light.
Remember 30.000lx are Ø360-400μMol!
I get faster growth than under a 300w TopLed (the ugly green, 96 colored 3w Epileds, 180w) with better nodes distance to make cuttings. Till now only used for 4 bonsai mothers but how it compares to the TopLed it will also work in flowering. Just a few meters red, I would stick to it.

Or a single vero-10 for $5, a $3 driver, and a $7 heatsink.
Could you suggest me a driver for Vero10

Of course we are all interested in super blaster flowering setups but this is the right area for getting things off the ground.
Gotta start some nice stout seedlings with no stretch as a first step and do it efficiently

Thanks for sharing your set up.

I noticed some SMD5630 strips change on aspect, some look sturdier and wider than the ones I have. I also noticed the chips are usually yellow on majority of strips, while in my strips they are grey.
Right now I don't have a multimeter with me, but I'm dying to know how much current they are drawing. The seller says they pull 72W (300 leds strip), I will check when possible.

I paid 7$ for 5 meters of SMD5630, 300 leds. For the price these might be the shittiest ones.

Hi Meta!

I get this data directly from digikey so I think that is the real output. Remember, this are the latest revision of 5630 from Sammy und Semiconductor. They will continue to develop and achieve this performance only when they running low at 50-65mA. This is similar to a 1-2Amps Cob operated with only 350mA and you need 5 SMD5630 to reach 1w.(3,2V x 0,065mA=0,208w, output per LED: 33,4lm, x5 =167lm from 1,04w. The Semiconductor 5630 need 6 LED's at 0,050mA for 1w/6x 30lm)

Your stripe looks normal for a blue SMD5630 stripe. The yellow and orange 5630 are coolwhite and warmwhite, because they use a phosphorous coating to convert blue light into white. The blue's don't need coatings like white LED's because they emit blue light without any coating. Blue is allways the base for any white LED.

I'm also using this shitty 7-12$ stripes but they work good so far. Maybe a bit too much green inside the spectrum but for vegging they are twice as better as my old 120w cfl.

I don't know enough about COBs, I shouldn't have made such statement.
As top performer I assumed something like the 3070 but still "70%/80" is incorrect. After checking the 3070 datasheet, 10% would have been more accurate if we assume driving them at 350mA.
