Solskin Simulation 4x4 vs Actualisation

We posted a while back about our really nice 4x4 simulation, we generated IES files on a skin and created what the data showed as an almost perfect layout

The idea, is it possible to model and create a build that meets a need without touching a tool.
So does it work
Lets build and see. We need a frame

Hang em high. ok 18inches is not that high

We will use the Lighting Passport to run the numbers and will summarise the data, stay tuned

If the real-world numbers match the simulation, I'm going to be very impressed. That would be downright amazing uniformity. But I would also question how much light is lost to the walls... Looking forward to the test!

That 4 board light would break my poor old back if i tried to lift it :eyesmoke:
We are modifying the 4x4 somewhat overengineered, just did an interesting 1 up for Perth customer, 2 channels Nichia P12 3000k, channel 3 in 660nm/730nm and 49 pcs of UVA, would you like just the board or complete build?

I really like the multiple channel design and the ability to control all the channels separately. 49pcs UVA diodes sound a lot for my taste although I don't know how much current they get and how much it is compared to the mainlight.

The other thing is, I like to add UVB bulbs and these bulbs typically put out three times more UVA than B. In my case I would take the boards with CRI80/90 mix on channel 1, 660's on channel 2 and 730's on channel 3.
But for those which are working without such bulbs it's a nice to have feature.
It's probably not the strong thc increasing effect one gets with UVB but there are other positive effects when using UVA (better taste, more healthy plants, less insects,...)
I like the boards but I love the solstrips even more for my specific situation.(limited height).
I will definitely order some of the new ones with Nichia v3 and contact you via PM when the time comes ..

Keep up the good work, bro! The more unique selling points the better..!

If you look at the light pattern on the wall behind, you see that the light already completely blends at slightly over half that distance. So I would go for something between 9" to 12" instead of 18".

The agromax pure uv is the opposite 75 USB, 25 uva, they have one called the 10000K finisher too that's worth a look. Personally I'd like to get away from them and go 100% led.

The frame was sitting right on the wall and does show the primary beam angle of the leds, however our simulation was based on 80% reflective walls at 18" so were duplicating that to really see how simulation and reality collide

Yes the Sol strip can of course replicate the Skin but is more flexible in the layout. Customer requested the 49 UVA, but I tend to agree 49 is a bit of overkill, we were running channel 3 at 700ma

Wow! That's more than 100w UVA; shall his plants glowing in the dark, lol!?
They are probably for an extra week with a lot of UVA. I've seen vids on youtube where they used high amounts of blue and UVA just for the last week. It shall have a stronger effect. Who knows...
If I could cast a vote I would vote the sol-strips and -skins for the best growlight 2018!
Great product; can not praise them enough ...

Ahh, sorry! It's vise versa! But also 25% is already enough, no need to add more. I would also prefer to use LED only but the currently exsisting UVB diodes last not long enough and are much too expensive. As soon as something with longer shelf life is available I would be the first one who switch off the bulbs.

Final numbers
Testing Parameters
  • Lighting Passport used for testing
  • 3 channels all maxed, 2 Channels of Nichia V2 P12 flux at 4000/3000/ and 660 deep red Cree XQE, so around 540 watts, total 2700 Leds
  • 36 points tested as per the Simulated software
  • Results were slighting higher than our simulation but on reviewing the data we had the light actually hanging at 17 inches while the simulation data was using 19 inches
  • we used aluminium plates on the side for reflective walls as we dont have a tent with reflective walls. The simulation was based on 80% reflective walls and we dont have a measure on the effectiveness of the alum vs the simulation, however actual testing without reflective vs reflective walls made a big difference, but I sure Im preaching to the converted
Summary:
We set out to test the idea that simulated grow data is a powerful tool. The ability to layout a room without touching a piece of hardware has got to be a big cost saving and helps alleviate doubt about a light purchase, they are expensive and you should be able to differentiate between systems/choices with the certainty that what you buy meets your specific needs and is not varnished in BS
