Soil Question

Hi all, first I would like to thank all of you for the help you provided me already. Atlas I am still learning and I have many questions. My question today is: Is it possible to cook out the nutrients from the soil. For example miracle grow soil has nutrients already in their soil. I can't find any soil in my area that doesn't already have nutrients added. I know how to sterilize soil but does that process also kill the nutrients in the soil? Thanks again in advance for all your help.

no it wont and its not a good idea anyway kills good microbes in the soil thats why all good brands dont sterilize

I have not personally tried this, but have read that some both take the nute balls they find out and drench the crap out of the soil to break the earlier nute balls out leaving less in grow period. Not sure what pre-flushing soil will do to the soil though... but grorite is correct as usual!

Ok I won't try that. What about making my own mix from some soil from my yard. We have really good soil here. My main concern is the tight ass budget I am on. Any advice on that would be great.

if you use dirt from your yard there is a very high chance of your grow being infested pick up some promix its cheap

If you did your own dirt you would need to mix it with perlite and blood n bone meal and maybe clay or sand and maybe stuff to adjust pH depending on what kind of soil is in your area. That still wont be the best but it would work and you would have to buy everything to mix in but it would be better than just straight dirt. Could you take soil from a flood plain somewhere near you? or at least some silt to mix in?

I am actually in a flood plain so I got that covered. I read that you can sterilize soil by baking it, so if I did that and then add the items you said I should be alright?

You may as well buy regular potting soil if you are going to spend money on all of that stuff. I can get enough Petitte's generic potting soil, already sterilized, to fit in 3 4-gallon pots for $10.00, and the stuff works great.
