So Now It's Swine Flu

(CNN) -- The presence of swine flu in Mexico and the United States is "a serious situation" that could develop into a pandemic, the World Health Organization's director-general said Saturday.

"This is an animal strain of the H1N1 virus and it has pandemic potential because it is infecting people," Dr. Margaret Chan said Saturday speaking to reporters by phone.
In Mexico, 68 people have died from swine flu, according to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.
Eight people were confirmed to have swine flu in the United States; six in California and two in Texas, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
All eight have recovered, according to CDC's acting Director Richard Besser.
Preliminary results from tests of students at a New York school do not rule out swine flu, the director of surveillance for the Bureau of Communicable Diseases said Saturday.
Dr. Don Weiss said the samples will now be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Test results could be known by Sunday.
He said the samples came back positive for "Type A" flu and the tests will need to determine the samples' subtype.
He said up to 100 students at the Queens school reported feeling ill.
CDC has tested 14 samples of the virus from Mexico and found seven were identical to the virus found in the U.S. cases, Besser said.

"This situation has been developing quickly," he said. "This is something we are worried about."

Asked whether the committee would address raising the agency's alert concerning the virus to 6, a pandemic alert and the highest level on WHO's scale, Chan said, "Yes, indeed."
The alert stands at 3, meaning "No or very limited human-to-human transmission."
Chan said Saturday that WHO does not have indications of similar outbreaks elsewhere.
However, she said, "The situation is evolving quickly. A new disease is by definition poorly understood."
White House spokesman Reid Cherlin said Saturday that the White House was taking the situation "seriously and monitoring for any developments."
Health officials in Texas announced Saturday the temporary closure of Byron Steel High School in Cibolo, Texas, where swine flu was confirmed in two students earlier this month.
"The purpose is to reduce the risk to students, staff and the community," said Dr. Sandra Guerra, a public health official in Guadalupe County, Texas.
Mexico City has closed all of its schools and universities until further notice because of the virus, and on Saturday, the country's National Health Council said all soccer games would be played Saturday without public audiences.

More than 1,000 people have been sickened in the country, and officials are trying to determine how many of those patients had swine flu, the country's health minister, Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos, said.
None of the U.S. patients had direct contact with pigs, though a patient who lives in San Diego had traveled to Mexico, the CDC said.

Besser said officials had not found common exposure or behavior among the eight U.S. patients.
"We have not seen any linkage at all between the cases in Texas and California," he said.
The new virus has genes from North American swine influenza, avian influenza, human influenza and a form of swine influenza normally found in Asia and Europe, said Nancy Cox, chief of the CDC's Influenza Division.
Swine flu is caused by a virus similar to a type of flu virus that infects people every year but is a strain typically found only in pigs -- or in people who have direct contact with pigs.
There have, however, been cases of person-to-person transmission of swine flu, the CDC said. Officials found evidence, for example, that a patient transmitted the disease to health care workers during a 1988 apparent swine flu infection among pigs in Wisconsin.
Experts think coughing, sneezing and contaminated surfaces spread the infection among people.
The new strain of swine flu has resisted some antiviral drugs, officials said.
The human influenza vaccine's ability to protect against the new swine flu strain is unknown, and studies are ongoing, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC's interim deputy director for science and public health program. There is no danger of contracting the virus from eating pork products, she said.

Canada is also testing samples from Mexico "and has placed a travel alert for travel to Mexico," CDC spokesman David Daigle told CNN by e-mail.

The United States had not issued any travel alerts or advisories by late Friday, but some private companies issued their own warnings.
This could be serious, but I'm not feeling worried about it.

It's curable through vaccination.

Does anyone know if those contaminated flu vaccines were recalled?

I'm trying to connect the dots here... this does not look good. Either the media is hyping this or they aren't saying enough, to keep panic down. If they decide that people need to get vaccinated to prevent more problems... those tainted flu vaccines are still out there...

You know its not paranoia if they really are out to get you :)

Its a bitch you want the best for your kids and you know these things can work but then you hear about mercury and avial flu and your like WTF. I mean its one thing to just be a bunch of dumb ass knuckleheads who can't keep live human form avian flu out of a vaccine, oops ;) But if you think they did it on purpose then your a loon.

I say what diffrence does it make, on purpose or mistake, this could have killed millions but, "opps our bad," WTF????

The loonacy argument doesn't work anymore because its safer to be a loon then trust these companies or the government.

I was lucky to get a flu shot last year, but I don't know if it covers this swine flu. Really, I'm not surprised that something like this happened... if history teaches us anything, we were due for an outbreak of some sort.

Then again this could all be brutal medial hype. I'm keeping an eye on the situation, though. Can't pretend I'm not a little bit worried.

I'll take my chances, my kids all have the shot though. I'll risk autism, roll the dice, actually OK odds for the kids. I will keep an eye on it to though. Your right we are over due I guess.

The count is up to 82 in Mexico, and cases found in New York, and in Europe now, as I have heard this Morning on the radio, although, I havent heard that much about it....

Your not covered, though viruses if close would help you to start fighting it off faster and could make a differance.

The pigs south of the border have brought this to US.

i just saw the press conference not too long ago
What did they talk about? I can't tell if this is being hyped or they aren't saying enough.

The news is good at making everything sounds a billion times worse than it is. But they aren't saying to much about this. Just a little bit of information. Makes me wonder if they're trying to keep it under wraps so people don't panic. At the same time, it doesn't seem so bad.

Even the normal more-common flu bug can kill people... it's a matter of whether you're high risk or have a depressed immune system. Wash your hands extra, be careful about who you share your pipes/bongs with (or sterilize the mouthpiece after every usage), and take lots of vitamin C and you'll have a good chance of fighting this one off. I think.

The media is doing what they usually do...hype it up...with that said everyone should be observant of this. It's showing up worldwide, it has been proven to be capable of spreading from human to human, & it's mutating rapidly. It's actually 4 different strains spliced into one - bird/human/2 pig. I also noticed that many of the deaths in Mexico are amongst young healthy people - not a positive sign. There is no need to be fearful though...like all things it will come to pass.

A mixed flu virus outbreak is retardedly suspicious.

This isn't a serious situation yet, though. More than 10,000 people die a year in the US from the seasonal flu. They've only confirmed 20 infected people in the US, none of which have died.

I'm glad to see that your calm Microdizzey. I would be willing to bet that this virus wasn't made by nature although nature may have an effect on it now that it's out in the open.

I'm not going to stress until people are dropping like flies here. I'm very curious about the situation in Mexico though. I feel that were aren't being told real statistics.

I think it's ironic that it started in Mexico. With all the crap going on there and now this? And why is it that it's killing mexicans but the americans are recovering from it? I may be high but i'm thinking it was done by man and not nature. Think i'm just high? haha.

p.s. it's been a long time sine i have posted on this site and all of things it's this swine flu i'm commenting on. It is scary not knowing. i recommend all of you to start taking juice plus. i haven't had a cold or flu for over two years! this stuff is awesome!

I don't even see why it's that big of a deal. Yes, worse case scenario we end up with a 1918-like Pandemic (which would really suck)

However it has to be remembered that the 1918 Flu Pandemic migrated to infect pigs (Swine) prior to that Pigs did not routinely catch the flu.

Then there's the gaping difference between the United States now and the United States then.

Typical Media Fear Mongering. They have to feed on that shit like Vampires Feeding on Blood...
