so confused - what's a good led for veg only?

i've vegged plants for several years - i know cfl's work great for the veg period but i'm just tired of adjusting them and also the heat they give off.

i was thinking California LW 100 and sent a message stating it would be for veg only. they replied that the Solarstorm 110 is not a stand alone unit and i would need to 220.

wouldn't a 110w be okay for veg? i'm confused.

http://californialightworks.com/product/solarflare-110-vegmaster/ looks like a veg light I think they were saying it would need something to help bloom if you wanted to bloom with it.

That light is fine for vegging only. I went to led because of the daily cfl adjustment battle, and high temps. Now I use a Kessil H350 Deep Purple to Veg. Then add an H350 Magenta to finish flowering. My first led was a 135 watt ufo off ebay for about a bill. It was great to just hang over tops and lose most of the temps and cfl's. I just used that and put a few cfl's on the sides of the plant for flowering.

The hans is $4.36/dissipation W if I understand the power consumption correctly while the Onyx Veg is $1.90/PAR W. Also, because HANS reds it needs very good cooling to avoid temp droop, yet it claims: "Metal Core PCB for the very best cooling" yikes no heatsink?

I agree about the lenses, I would remove them before I would use it.

Last time I checked the onyx panels seem to have completely inadequate cooling system (under specd heatsink& airflow)to handle the watts.......hence the shutoffs

Spaced out 3w vs 10w diodes packed into a small housing calls for drastically different cooling needs as you know.

IMO a Hans 150 will cover a larger area in veg with less watts and run reliably.....worth the marginal price bump.

Be safe supra.....

You've NEVER seen one shutoff??? really?

In YOUR OWN thread brother

I won't dwell on the issues and for some odd reason the problem seems to have straightened itself out( but who really knows) , Mike at Rapid is sending me two new bloom units to replace these. Temps have been a little high and it's a thermal shut off problem they think. I notice the two that do shut down have a newly designed housing for the meanwell power supply and it has much less openings for airflow. Both units that shut off have this design in the power supply.
The veg and other two bloom with more slots for airflow have run flawless.

Put up the last bloom onyx and it still seems to be turning off due to heat.
The really great thing is that Mike at Rapid is sending a couple more and a label to send the others back

So long story short I've only used 2 of my 4 Onyx lights due to thermal issues, which have nothing to do with my ambient temperatures which averaged typically 88 to 89 with lights on and air circulated, lights off with minimal air flow temps average 78 to 80. I lost one led panel early was able to use on of the two I had yet to hang over the other 4x4 footprint in the other half of the flowering room.

Therefore I did not install the additional lights but kept as spares as I was nervous I could possible loose another during flower. Which happened recently early last week just after completing 7 weeks. Unlike the first time this happened Rapid LED did not have a replacement to send me right away. 20 days out I am told before I can get a replacement unit.

These panels are supposed to be rated at 150 F before they are supposed to shutdown so I am not sure what the deal is.
I will know soon how will they performed for I should be harvesting some time this week

No problems with the cooling design then?????lol...................and NO I don't own any onyx panels, as soon as I saw the frosted pmma secondary lenses on them I knew they where not for me;p

Personally I have had zero problems with overheating . Out of 6 I've had zero problems of any kind.
I have two right now that are running within an inch of two lec 315, zero issues .
And btw, the frosted lens work great.
Having not run one I don't think your info is credible.

actually I do remember a time one was shutting off , was way too hot in the tent. That was my fault. Keep room temps down and they're fine.

As soon as I get the water cooling going on the room and the co2 gen running I'll raise temps and we'll see what happens.
At least rapid won't threaten to out you if you don't like them, unlike some of these companies.

For $250.00, (price was $325.00 pre-Xmas), this is a solid deal, (24 Illumitex F1s and a 450mA 120 watt Invetronics driver), for a Veg light IMHO. Runs around 110-120 watts and will Veg 6 medium plants in 3 gallon pots no problem in my experience. It's passively cooled and will get warm, not hot, after 12+ hours on. The driver does get very hot but it's on like a 12 foot power cord so it doesn't need to be inside the grow. A bit bulky but not heavy, it's a no-frills Illumitex panel without the typical Illumitex price and heft. Don't flower with it, (it's under-powered for flowering IMO), don't fuck with it, (I did with mine and ruined it), and you will have a solid veg panel at a great price for a while. If I wasn't space constrained I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Rapid's Onyx Veg panel is a tad bit on the overkill side IMHO. XML2s in a panel that size can't be an easy cool. IDK what mA it's running at but it seems to be a shitload of intensity in a little package. I was just looking for a new veg panel and looked at the Onyx for like 5 seconds with that 400.00 price tag. Rapid needs to upgrade/expand it's line so people have choices that fit their grow-room.
