Today I started another few dozen seeds for germination. I cleaned up and repotted some 6" pots and a 18 hole seedling flat for them. I used a mix of 50% mg moisture control, 25% spagnum peat, and 25% topsoil. I'll call this my 09 late season project. pics tomorrow since I was sweaty dirty and tired. I found a promising place to set them out near a nice creekbank on some abandoned farm land. I will get the ground ready later this week or so to give it plenty of time to settle before the seedlings are ready. I hate that we had such a late wet cold spring but things are looking up.

I know what you mean about the weather. I think we've had 2 days that have broke 80 so far. Today was a little warmer but yesterday it was 70 with 90% hum. Sticky as fuck.

Here's the new project that I started yesterday. Went out and broke up some of the ground but I might reconsider the plans there. The ground was hard and dry, not what I was expecting at all considering the amount of rain we've had. I might try some 5 gal bucket containers there since the water source creek is right there and the native weed groth is already so thick. They would be well hidden in the thick growth and portable if need be. I've got some time to consider that or break up and amend that hard ass ground. I'm leaning towards the buckets though, LOL.

Well well! I underestimated the seed viability and wound up planting 52 seeds that sprouted. LOL, That should make for a pretty interesting late season project. There were just a few more seeds that could sprout so I'll include any of those if they sprout by morning. All work and no play...LOL

Since I had a little time on my hands I went out to see about the males I have growing after sexing. I was preparing to set them out into the soil when it started thundering & lightning. Oooohhhh Ohhhh, I snapped a few pics and then the bottom fell out of the sky. I'll try to get them set out another time.

Today I had 6 more of the seeds that germinated. That only left 4 seeds that didn't from all of the ones I started. So out of 62 seeds that I started 58 have been planted in starting pots/jugs/or flats. That was an amazing germination rate. I hope they perform that well. I guess after the males or culled and normal seedling attrition I should have another couple or three dozen females to set out. With that many estimated to survive I'd better put them in the ground or the watering would be a nightmare. Guess I'd better make a trip to the gardening center for some potting mix, peat, and lime to start packing in.

do you have a rain catcher set up at any of ur plots?

and a grav drip watering system might be something to look into.

I've thought about a 12v pump < like http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_16832_16832 >but I need one that would do an honest 20 ft of head to work out of my creeks. A Gravity Flow system might work at a couple of my sites but the nearest pond at elevation is over 100 yds away even there. The biggest problem being the risk of detection by landowners or hunters with that much tubing to run. Burying tubing or hose is almost impossible because of the roots from huge trees.

I love it when you get that many seeds to germ!! I had a pretty good rate as well. Now just hope for alot of girls!!

Today I went and checked on some of the young girls I have set out. I'm liking the effect topping them has done. Most of them are bushing out now and looking better. Here's a few of them...<one pic per plant>

Wonderful morning for the snakes to be out too. He was non-poisonous so I let him alone. And Here's a quick look at some of the doubles from the hog area. A few of the smaller ones that had started to flower early have gotten a bonsai ruderalis look to them. I've heard they might grow through it so I'll watch them and see. There was another half dozen in another place that I watered but didn't take pics. Oh yeah, have 40 of the sprouts up today from the late season project... and I still need to plant those males....

I FINALLY got the males in the ground today. Yeah, I know, I must be freaking crazy to have a male garden. For the last 30 years I've killed every male I could find and now here I am out in the 100 degree heat putting some out to grow. I do believe slabhead has slipped off into the void. Since these guys are 5 miles from my ladies I don't believe it will be a problem. I'll always check them after any female contact and only collect pollen from the ones I decide to use for breeding.
Dang sure been a busy day around here.

The seedlings are doing ok today. I think there are about 42 of them up and you can see more breaking through the soil. I had one that probably won't make it because the taproot grew up and the sprout went down. I guess the seed got upside down on planting and was confused. I've seen that happen before so wierd...

Also put some mulch around the males today. With the temps already running in the mid 90's and heat indexes in the 100 to 103 range the soil will be drying out extra fast.
