SIP thread -- (Sub-Irrigated Planter)

Been awhile, but I ditched the 5 gallon SIPs and contacted Grassroots Fabric pots to custom fit a living bed for the cabinet. Now running a lush 50 gallon living bed sitting on top of a 16 gallon reservoir with a scrog net sitting overtop of the whole setup. Just transplanted 2 clones into the bed with 2 more waiting on sex to show before transplanting. All is good in the laundry room now :blsmoke:

Definitely pretty fucking cool. I've mentioned wanting to do this before. I'd like to see something like that go into production.

Next grow, all from seed.

Dec. 18, flip to 12/12. Photographs run from then until today. The stretch is pretty much done.

I pollenated one cola on each plant this run.

My new 500W LED bar light showed up. It will replace the 300W LED hood, but I gotta move the in-line fan.
Finished March 18th, hung to dry.

Trimmed and jarred today, 11.6 oz. altogether. Very different smokes and highs.

Which plant's genetics I'll work as yet undetermined, but I have my early favorites.

Next run: Lucky Lime. Roots are just getting into the reservoirs. Will veg another week or two.

Need more pics of the res how the hell is that working lol I’m bloody interested looks like a floating fab pot with a ebb drain in it lol

Lol, I got ya! I built a plywood box and sealed in with a rubberized coating to be water tight. The pvc frame has feet that support the center of the frame that sit in the reservoir and the edge of the frame sits just above the reservoir. I can see the water level either from the sight tube built into the front face of the res or there's a slight enough gap between frame to allow me to see the water level as well.

This is really just a test run to see how it all holds up but so far so good. It took just about a month before the res needed a fill. But there's only been a cover crop running since early March and transplanted a couple clones 2 weeks ago. I put 2 more plants in this past week and when I dug down to make my hole the soil was moist all the way to the first couple inches of top soil.

Fuck I missed this place!!!
Took down my grow last year and moved to a new place.
I now have gobs of outdoor sunshine and so want to try planting some veggies and tomatoes in my Earthboxes.

I have all the inputs to create my soil mix again. It was basically based on Build a Soil and Coots Mix. I live west coast Canada.

1. can I just plant veggies in the earthboxes using my ‘cannabis OLS’ recipe or do I need to make adjustments to make it more suitable for lettuce and tomatoes and stuff?

2. I’ve never tried to grow my own food outside before as I never had enough sunshine. What kinds of fruits/veggies would be well suited to SIP/Vancouver island/organic living soil?

can’t wait to get inspired! Love to see pics of what you’ve grow. Yourselves.

Yea the bed I'm using has a moisture lock barrier around the center. The top and bottom few inches of the bed ate just regular fabric pot material. Got any pictures of your setup?

That’s super cool!! Would you mind if I shared your pictures over on the Overgrow SIP thread? I know a few people that would be very interested in your setup.

Here's my humble growbox grow at the mo'. Trying for an ultra-low-effort spring/summer run with a few small plants. No top-dressing, teas, or anything other than adding water to the res. These were all tiny clones put straight on 12/12

These two looked like crap at transplant (see the leaves about 3 nodes up from the bottom). A couple weeks in the SIP and they're back on track.

Sweet setup :blsmoke: I would get some thick plastic in the plywood box asap. That rubberized coating is good stuff, but submerged plywood is risky business. All it takes is 1 pinhole anywhere on a panel, and that water will go to work, and it's efficient at its job. I'd get a sheet of acrylic and some epoxy and build a reservoir that's strong and will be watertight forever.

Good day!
Topping up the reservoirs isn't as much fun as it used to be... so I've added a float valve. Now I fill an 8 gallon container, on a shelf next to the tent, with a hose from the tap. Easy Peasy.
It's been 8 days and all looks well. No leaks, thank the gods.
I plan to eventually bypass the reservoir and connect the tap directly to the control box.

Well played, been considering something similar for a bit but haven't figured out where to put a large enough secondary rez

Currently, I use a repurposed 8 gallon square bucket which is about 24 inches above the containers. I find it takes up minimal space and doesn't require refills too often as of yet. It was the reservoir for my Blumats, so I already had the bulkhead fitting installed. The 8mm Blumat tubing is slightly too big for the 1/4" barb on the float valve, but snug enough to not leak yet. A tiny gear clamp is in order.

Maybe that is the play for me, I've been trying to figure out one much larger to see if I could have a central res for the 5 SIPs at once but secondary for each would definitely be easier to rig up

My plan is to get my other two 45L containers into the tent also and use the 8 gallon reservoir to fill all 4 by way of the one control box.
Once they're filled, the 8 gallon reservoir should be enough for topping up. I'm a bit nervous about flooding to hook everything directly to the water supply yet, though.

Microbeman suggest 15 inch depth for microbes to peak. Is anyone maintaining 15 inches as it seems all these tubs are a few inch short?
found round buckets 60l at 20inches allows 5 inches for water does that seem cool ?
