Shwag Practice 1st time

So this is my first grow attempt. I did alot of reading and searching before making any decissions about my setup. I only wanted to harvest one small plant at a time so I bought a 150w HPS ballast kit for $50 and built myself a light. I later relised that wasnt enough and bought another. I now have 2 150w lights hanging side by side in the flowering room. In my veg room I have 1 4ft flourescent, 4 100w cfl's and 2 60w cfl's. I am using a drip system in both rooms with hydrotron clay medium. I am using the GH 3 part flora series nutes with some kool bloom in flowering. I have gone through 4 plants and so far only had 1 female and she is 21 days into flowering. The seeds I am using are unknown bag seeds. Dirt weed is more like it. I just wanted some practice before ordering some expensive seeds offline. I will post lots of pics feel free to comment good or bad. Im here to learn so all advise is welcome.

I have got a problem. I was doing the calculations and it looks like my plant only has another 18" of vertical growth before it will hit the lights at there highest setting. I have been LSTing the plant for 2 weeks now and it has at least 4 or 5 more weeks in there. Does anyone think I can keep the hieght down below 18" by LSTing for the next 5 weeks? The plant is currently 40" tall.

Here is the most recent pic of the LSTed monster. I measured while up there taking the pic and she is 40" by 30" wide at the top of the canopy. There are buds everywhere at least 50 or more popping up all over since I started the LSTing. Any suggestions or am I doing the right thing.

Yeah I know but it looks good already and I still have about 5 more weeks. I think I should yield alot off this one or at least I hope. Because it took up the whole flowering room I cant get anymore in there to start.

Recently been told my plant is of the sativa family so it will take longer than expected to be ready for harvest. I will continue to post pics. I take them every other day to make it seem more dramatic of a change.

I don't think your plant is a sativa...at least not 100%

Check out post #2 in this link. Indica leaves are wide and usually stubby/short (depending on size of plant obviously), while sativa leaves are very long, thin, finger-like projections. Most marijuana today is a cross of the two, making it hard to really identify them. You got your seed from some mexican brick shwag so there really is no way of telling.

To me, they look more indica dominant. Especially the little ones in the small pots. But that doesn't necessarily mean they will finish flowering sooner.

It doesn't matter which one it is or which is more dominant, you just want to keep the plant as healthy and happy and possible, and you'll be rewarded with the best possible product from these genetics. That doesn't mean it will be the bomb, but it should be better than the herb it came from.

HUH Well my fan leaves look indica while the leaves closer to the bud look like the sativa. You are probly right some kind of hybrid. Again this is for practice more than anything but if I happen to get some nice bud to smoke then I wont be unhappy. :eyesmoke:

i think your plants looked so stretched out is cause youre only running a 150w hps. you shoud be keeping the lights pretty close to the plants (like a foot away) and raising them as they grow.
or better yet, upgrade your wattage!

but still, the buds looking pretty good, gj

Yeah I have already been informed that my Lighting is inadaquite. I like having the 2 lights because it covers more of the plant. This plant Has a 40" by 30" wide canopy and its hard to cover the whole thing even with 2 lights. I build my own lights so I guess its time to build another. Maybe I will build a 400w next time. I like the small ones because there isnt much heat dissipation. Easier to keep the room cool. What bennifit would come from larger lights? What do you gain from deeper light penetration?

with better light penetration, your lower buds/leaves will receive more light and grow more.
light gets much weaker the farther you are away from the source, so those lower buds are getting nowhere near the amount of lumens the top bud is getting.
a more powerful light also encourages more growth

with a more powerful light, that solves the issue, but youre also correct, youll have a major heat issue to deal with. (i suggest a cool tube or air cooled reflector if you have the funds)

No not really, thats why I have been building the lights myself because I can build one for like $50. I priced reflectors and they are like $80 just for the reflector. Thats more than the whole light cost to build. Here is a pic of 1 of my lights. The 2nd one is similar but a little different. I paid $10 dollars for the container I used and $5 dollars on some flat white heat resistant paint (originally for painting BBQ grills) to paint the inside of it for reflection. I was told that flat white is the most reflective color before stepping up to Mylar.
