Shopping on your phone

I'm about to build a couple of web sites and flipping between making a non responsive design or responsive design for the website.

I don't know what the audience will be like but I can't see people buying the product through the phone its not really something that you must have.

I personally efing hate mobile designed websites that cram all the content into a tower of perpetual scrolling hell and can't imagine having to scroll through say amazon for a product on the phone or say even being able to browse for products like I normally do on my desktop.

So what's everyone’s view on mobile shopping? By the way RIU sucks on the phone. I vertical the site is super narrow.

What products are you selling?

When I shop, I find what others think is the best, look at specs on mfg's sites, then go to a few retailers sites and order from whoever has the best price.

It'll be vaporizers but only about 10 products and hydro equipment with lots of categories.

Is this on your phone or table or desktop? On my phone I mostly look things up really quickly like check RIU but for the most part there's nothing that I need that is a must buy now before I get home.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with a no responsive design that looks the same on both phone desktop but have the product area collapse a bit to fit phones better and just let people pinch and zoom. I'll make the text larger for phone but that's about it.

I'm more worried about the check out on the phone as I plan to not keep any personal info on the server besides the email address for account login. I know this might make it pain in the ass to fill out if someone ever want to buy on the phone but I'd rather have to deal with a lost sale here and there then having to email people that the site got compromised and all into is in the wild.

I do research on my phone and make purchases from a desktop. I also hate the layout of most mobile sites. I've either not made a purchase or went to a more costly source because a mobile site annoyed me so much..

I use Opera on an android device for pretty much everything. I've even got used to riu on the mobile.
Personally I prefer to use desktop versions of websites even when there is a mobile version. They're usually much better.
Odd thing about riu on my browser is i can only see peoples SIG when I have the phone in landscape mode...

Thanks for the input. I usually ask on web tech related sites and always get the "responsive design is the future and now" but its all from web designers lol who are pushing to since its more work for them. Figured this is my demographic so best to ask here.

For me I prefer desk top version and using pinch and zoom on the phone then viewing one item at a time with infinite scrolling.

I've been experimenting with responsive design for a bit this week end and for simple websites its no big deal to create one but looks like complicate shit for sites with lots of categories.

As for the sig it probably gets cut off as the div cell downsizes or is hiddden in portrait mode.

This is how I am. If the site doesn't have a good mobile site I'll shop somewhere else. When I'm ready to buy and I happen to be on my phone, I'm not opening up the laptop.

But what is browsing easily?. I can not stand having to thumb scroll for 5 min to look at products per page. I personally hate doing anything pass reading reviews or quick looks ups for contact info as phone is just not practical for most things and I'll either tether my laptop in my car to wait till I get home and get on my desktop. For me RIU is ass broken on the phone and not user friendly at all.

I don't have a pad but I'd image it way better to browse on a pad and read into then having to stick your nose into the phone. if I was on a pad I'd always go for a normal site I think I'd lose it if I had to look at a dumb down mobile site.

I don't have to scroll when I know what I want, I type it into the search box. RIU works fine for me on chrome on a galaxy s6.

I don't have a desktop so I guess I prefer mobile
I do lots of graphics, run game server and ice cast server so need desktop. I can't imagine not having a desktop. I have several laptops and still will wait till I get in front of the desktop to do real work.

I always click desktop site, classic site or whatever. I've been shopping on my phone for 7 years now. Ebay, Amazon, and there are at least a dozen more and I do not like the mobile versions. Ordering everything from high dollar jewelry to actual live plants, high performance bike parts, I even bought a generator off of ebay once. I don't remember exactly but, I am sure I've ordered 100's of things off the net. I hate mobile and most apps. Ironically, I don't mind RIU mobile. But, maybe that's because I've always only used it on my phone.

But, that's just me. I would think that some may actually like mobile and thats what they are used too. So it might be a good idea to offer up both options.

But that's different than say looking through a category and reading up on reviews. For example say I'm looking at flash hhd or video cards. Normally I scroll through see which models I want and lots are made by different companies. I check through a few sites and compare on New Egg or Amazon problem is on a mobile site its just horrendous doing that. vs having a fill site and all info in front of you.

For me on Motorola Moto X on any browser RIU in vertical only covers 3/4 of he screen and if I switch to horizontal it doesn't fit the screen.

I don't find it horrendous. Guess I'm just used to it.

I'm looking at that option the one site it'll be easy to do the other size will have 100's of products and it just painful how much content I'll need to remove to make it work on mobile and I don't want to remove any of the content.

I feel ya. Since my first iPhone in 07 or 08, my PC has steadily become more and more obsolete for me. I use a PC at work and to play poker. Everything else I do and have done on the iphone since 07-08. I still like full site best when I'm shopping on the phone.

Good luck with your project. I looked into starting a hydro website like 5 years ago. I am not a code writer tho and the learning curve seemed to steep for me to be successful at it. Good luck.

The site is for my store, in Canada the industry is so stupid the wholesalers wont sell to you unless you have a store front pretty ass backwards. These days it helps to know programming languages but with CMS systems like Drupal and code snippets you can make some crazy websites with out having to code one line of code.
