So i just planted some seeds about a week ago in some eco friendly peat moss that i use for my other herbs. If i want to continue growing my little friends in soil, whats the best soil, or peat moss, whatever, to grow them in to keep them going, and hopefully going strong? I would love to set up a hydro system but unfortunatly thats not an option at this point so soil it is! Any advice is greatly appriciated!

after germinating, start em off in 8 oz paper cups of peat moss. gorw for roughly 2 weeks under flouresent lights.

transplant into 2 or 3 gall containers. the soil mix i use is as follows:

12 cups baked peat moss
6 cups fox farm ocean forest
4 ucps happy frog
2-3 cups per lite (soil airator)

this will fill a 2 gal container... its a very sollid medium

3 weeks after transplant start nuting with fox farm products, u wont be dissapointed!!

your babes will need a good supply of nitrogen. there are as many different fertz as there are people on here who would be all too glad to let you know what worked for them. where do you live? Cold climes or warm? indoors? many plants, a few? stealth or not. everyone I've seen here all use something different. what's available in the BC dro shops you can't get in the US, so it's different all around the world. but anything with a good amount of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash would do.i use a liquid plant food for vegging at (10-15-10) these numbers refer to the nitrogen-phosphate-potash amounts in it. for flowering i use stuff rated at 24-8-16 (better for blooms).sure there's a whole lot of other goodies you can use, bat guano, fish oil, blood meal, etc...but that's for more experienced people. for now just a standard xx-xx-xx with a good nitro number will do.

good advice for grow stage, not for seedlings

no fertz for two weeks sorry! got ahead of myself there. they're tender and will drop into shock if you try to fertilize them now (happened to me) lost about ten plants my first time with over loving just light. water heat and love and light and more light, did I mention light? 24/7 w/ light or at least 18/6

Okay so is light important? lol JK. If basic fluorescent bulbs will do the trick then i am set. Where i live, we get 4 distinct seasons. Its snowing now but i dont intend to ever move them outdoors so that will never be a problem. They'll have their own shelf in my closet which, oddly enough, does have a (high) window and it has fluorescent light bulbs in it already. Serendipity i guess! As for the # of plants, i have 5 seedlings and just planted 9 more seeds This number will change when i find out which are males and which are females.

So once they're about two weeks old it will be okay to transplant them into bigger pots with fertilizer? i've been keeping myself a calander to keep track of whats going on.

Thanks so much for sharing your dirt recipe with me!!

ok, make sure you keep the temp a steady 75 or so degrees. it may be hard to do with the window in thw winter but is dentrimental.

flouresents will deff work. makes sure the wattage per bulb is around 55watts. also keep in mind; to keep seedlings from stretching you must keep the light under 3 inches away from top growth. so if the flouresent is in the celing, your gonna have to take it down and hang it closly over the babies.

transplant at 2 weeks its a good age. if you have the extra cash, get some high quallity organnic soil that is packed w/ wholistic nutes. (stay away from mirrical grow products. )

(adding a lil dolimite is the secret ingredient) the soils hold enough nutes to support viggorous growth till about 2-3 weeks after transplant. after that i use stricktly fox farm nutes, they rock

So if my lights are too far away they'll stretch because of hte phototropism right? I want to bring hte light to them as opposed to making them go to the light. makes sense. My seedlings are now about 2.5 inches in height and about a week old. I do plan to use organic soil cuz i grow veggies too. What is bad about miracle grow? I hear the Ph is too high and have also heard that scotts is closer to neutral. i unfortuantly dont have a fox farm dealer near my house so i will have to find a good organic substitute for that. Any suggestions?

When I first started in Sept I didn't even know of this site. I stumbled upon here by accident, so as a newb I had no idea and used MG. Stuff is the worst VERY acidic! I don't have a ph meter (no money) but it burned thru a couple of plants till I found this place and learned of ph highs and lows. but to make long story short MG also has bugs in it. I don't know what they are, little things with white wings. they are throught the entire basement. They don't hurt the plants, they're just so darn annoying. I just had a plant go belly up on me after I added 3 handfuls of MG into the grow medium. So, use anything else you can, just not miracle gro. (I do use their plant food booster stuff(powder) for flowering, though it's 24-8-16!

look here see how close they are to the plant tops? even a little closer is ideal for flourescents. the bulbs don't give off much heat so no further than 2". And you have to put them on either chains or hooks of some sort, to constantly adjust the lights height as your plants grow. and they'll grow real fast being that close to the lights. Mine grew (the first month anyhow before slowing down a bit) about 1-2" per day! I was daily moving my light up! I was leery at first too, you think light=burn. trust us it really works!

Yeah, i found this site by accident too but im so glad i did because even my parents who have grown before succeeded by accident and dont know what they did to get such great results. So i guess ill pick up some scotts and i also plan to use MG's food booster (liq). its a 10-15-10 mix. I didnt see any powder when i went to the hardware store but i did pick up my lights!

On average, what is the general time length from seed to smokeable bud? Im not in any rush but would love to know where i am on a timeline.

you can get seeds that go from seed to smokeable in as little as 6 weeks! most takes 2-4 months after harvest, drying, curing. Some strains take just 3 weeks to veg, mine took 2 months! Again, I had no idea what the heck I was doing for the first 1 1/2 months of growing. I actually grew just one lady before my present batch ( I lucked out, getting a nice lady from a 4 seeds). But that was just stick in the dirt water I borrowed for that one an HID light. But now I just use 4 foot flouro fixtures so mine are into their 7th day of flowering, just 'weeded' out 3 males today. so am down to 16 plants so far. mine shoukld finish in about another 4-5 weeks(ish!) it really is unpredictible, especially with baggie seeds! you really won't know until further along when you start to veg. by then you'll kind of know how fast your own plants are doing and will be able to guessimate their harvest time.
I started germination of my babies on Nov 18, 2007.
I should harvest around March 19th give or take days so 3 months, then drying for about 2 weeks or so, then curing for about a month.
Total from seed to smoke for me (estimate) is about 4 months most guys here claim 2-3 months, but they buy good seed and have better setups. I'll be happy with my harvest, that's all that matters.

Should i have my seedlings under lights with a fan on them or should i wait until after they get a little bigger and i transplant them?

as soon as they went fromgermination into flower pots. all I'd read here asd other sites, told me to start asap, to help strengthen stems and keep bugs at bay. so what the heck from day one. you really want thick stems, this is the way. My first plant, I used no fan and I hadto stake her durimng her entire flowering process her stem was less that 1/4 and she grew to 2 1/2 feet tall! So, I'd use the fan, on low at first if they are tiny.

I meant that id post pics after i transplanted...which i just did. it was a messy messy process and the cat may never be clean again lol.

Anyway, i've got a ghetteaux setup going on in my closet and im very happy with it. It works for my budg and for my area. If they get too tall i can easily move them to the floor.
