Seedlings under 600w hps light?????

I'm going to be growing 3 plants in fox farm ocean forrest soil under a 600 watt hps light. I'm going to start the seedlings under this light. My question is approximately how high above the seedlings should I hang the light? I'm guessing around 2.5-3 feet. Any suggestions? BTW this will be my first grow.....

That's exactly what I do. So to answer your question yes.

You could also just use a small 23 watt cfl for the 1st couple of weeks. I think using a 600 for seedlings is a waste. Unless you're starting a room full of seedlings. I use T5's for seedlings and clones because they don't need all that light just yet.
