watsup RIU it's been awhile but i finally moved to Cali, got medical and am ready to grow again! after being on the forum for days i cant find the answer i'm looking for.

i want to run a 400w air cooled hps in a 60x36x20 tent with an inline fan exhausting out.. i was thinking at least 190 cfm.

is the tent big enough too handle the light? and should i get say a 250cm fan? any advice would be greatly appreciated. i would hate to settle for a 250w if i could make this work easily..

thanks!

heres the tent in case you are interested http://www.amazon.com/GRN-Elements-GRN2-Reflective-Hydroponic/dp/B0063YHD0C

so the footprint of your tent is 20" x 36" and 60" tall? That's a weird shape, but I wouldnt go smaller than a 400w in there. If you're aircooling the light, you should be fine. They make dimmable ballasts now that can be dialed down 50/75/100% (quantum) or 60/75/100% (hydrofarm phantom).

If you don't already have your light, I'd honestly recommend buying a 600w dimmable light, and just running it on a lower setting. So when you inevitably decide to upgrade, you won't need to go buy more equipment.

Along those same lines, I'd recommend getting a bigger fan than you need. 4" and 6" inline fans runs on the same motor, so they use the same amount of electricity. Might as well buy a bigger fan than you need for when you decide to upgrade. You can run it on a speed controller so it only vents what you need, and the lower RPMs will make it run more quietly. (I'd recommend Can-fan Maxfans if you've got the money. They are smaller than a usual inline, and they run quieter.)

thanks for the fast reply Clown Baby.. i was thinking that it would be fine due to the fact that it will be air-cooled.

just seems difficult to find info on 400w's on a tent thats this one's size.. it is an odd size but almost perfect for my space.

considering the size of tent and i'm going to be cooling my hood plus using a carbon filter, would a fan rated at say 190 cfm or 250 cm be enough to keep temps under control with a passive intake?

i just feel like it would be overkill to get a 440 cfm or something even with a controller considering the tent size... what ya think?

I'd get the 250... But unless it's like a 4" centrifugal, I don't know that it'd have the static pressure to pull through a carbon filter.

id get a 400cfm fan and a fan controller. that way if during summer u have heat issues turn it to 100% and during winter u can dial it down to keep ur temps constant. plus if u decide to go bigger u wont have to buy a second larger fan. i rock my thousand in a vented hood with a 400cfm fan with no problems but a 250cfm would never work. gives u some options later on. that and u have to consider a filter and how many cfms u will lose becuz of it.

thanks for the reply! another question, if it is my last resort, is it ok to have my carbon filter outside of the tent? ill have the fan inside cooling my hood then ducting out to the carbon filter outside the tent.. is it ok to "blow" air as opposed to "sucking"? i will have a 440 cfm inline..

as long as the filter doesnnt specify that it has to be used in one direction u should be fine. if ur having problems with space u should try hanging it somewhere higher in ur tent. if u have the space that is.its allways better to suck the air rather than push it becuz u will lose cfms. but it should still work none the less as long as it still lets enough air flow thru it u should be ok.. good luck man.
