I'm no expert. But I have had heard (and had good results with) that buying brown rice flour from a store is not as good as buying organic brown rice and then grinding it in a coffee grinder (shaking it while grinding to help it get really powdery). I guess that it can loose many nutrients after its ground by sitting and being moved around a lot. Maybe just how the stores or manufacturers do it but my mycelium seems to grow much quicker and healthier when I grind it up at home then when (the first time) i just bought the brown rice flour.

well the only difference i can see between rhy flour and brown rice flour is that ones fine chopped rice and one is a finely chopped wheat. the reason ya want it organic is because you dont want it bleached or added with preservatives. so as long as the rhye flour is unbleached and preservative freee i shouldnt experience problems?? maybe??

if the store doesnt keep the BRF in a fridge, just keep walking....
If you realy want a mean substrate makeing some super healthy fungi, try and find any purple corn or grains.

What are you talking about??
None of the BRF I've bought has been refrigerated, and all of it has worked fine for me.
Where do you get your info?
since when is flour refrigerated?

Pre ground BRF works just fine!
Stop speculating, if you do not know the answer just say so!

Every decent health store I visit keeps it cooled... that is how rice flour is supposed to be stored... google it...

I've bought it from health food stores and large supermarkets, it is never refrigerated, just kept at room temp.

Breaking Rye flour cakes works ok with Virm
.
Just break the cake up in to small chunks
then lay them out, try to keep them level as poss using small pieces to fill gaps before casing

okay thanks a bunch midnight gardener! i was worried about it just turning into some bread during sterilization, or wouldnt break up right.

on another note, i was wondering if its cool to use perilite with other additives in it. I found some miracle grow perilite, but its got additives for root growth or somethin, using the casing method my mushies are gonna soak up all the moisture(and the additives) from the perilite. are these chemicals harmful at all?they are for plants...... not all of them are water obsorbant so most of them will stay in the perilite, im just worried about my mushies soakin up the water and these other chemicals and gettin fucked....its no big deal i think i might jsut get some pure perilite instead of worrying.

If you are having trouble getting things, Ebay i a good start most thing you will need are found on there.
You can def get Verm and perlite, a well as empty syringes for collecting spores and all other goodies to make life easier.
