Reptile UV-B lamps to increase THC production...

Hi,

I have been reading Ed Rosenthal's new book that came out this spring, the Marijuana Grower's Handbook (official Oaksterdam course book..heh).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZUY16G/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0932551319&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0E3EH1T9K2RHYBQ9KZ7B

My question is, he mentions how during the flowering period that THC can be increased substantially in direct relation to the amount of UV-B light the plants receive. This stimulates and increases THC production...at least thats what he claims.

I looked into Reptilian UV-B heat lamps used to heat and assist reptiles. They make these in T-5 lamps or CFL lamps. I was thinking about putting up a side lighting panel of T-5 lamps...one of the 4' long ones, 8 lamp ones. Go half UV-B reptile lamps, half 6500k cool flouro tubes (to supplement lighting in flower). What do you think? Is this a good idea?

Has anyone heard of using UV-B lamps or had direct experience with them? Do they really work?

Ed claims you should supplement 1/10 of your flowering wattage with UV-B lamps. ie if your using 1-1000w HID light for flower, you should also use 1-100w Reptile UV-B lamp.

Thoughts, comments?

Thanks! :leaf:

sounds like it should work, i have also herd of the uvb inc thc production, but havent done much research. Ill just suggest to get a uvb lamp with the highest rating, which is ten, i know this bc i had a chameleon and they needed high uvb to absorb calcium or they get bone diseases. Ide like to see if this works

You guys rock! Thanks RIU! Greeat responses. Now I just gotta get some money saved to get this side lighting project rolling. Ideally I want 3 of the 4' 8 lamp flouro panels. Run them all alongside my flowering chamber. Gonna cost about $900 or $1000... :( But it should be fucking badass side lighting when I'm done! :)

Edit -- here's an interesting short read from the US Skin Cancer Foundation regarding UV-A and UV-B lights..

Ok apparently Daniels is already trying this...was reading his thread. Riddle says to use only Reptisun 5.0 lamps as the 10.0's are too strong...and to only run them about 15-20 mins 2x/day and keep the lights 30" from the plant canopy. Soooo...I probably don't need to flouro panels. Can probably just dangle 1 CFL lamp above the canopy for every HID light I have...so 3 total should do me I think. Trying to figure out the best way to do this..
