Renewable Energy + Battery Storage = Fossil Fuels Obsolete, Even Natural Gas

wood is a renewable resource......you use toilet paper don't you?
Of course, but still habitat is shrinking. There are plenty of clearcut lots on this planet to not have to deforest more to build a new plant.

Edit: just want to say, I like Tesla as a company and want them to succeed, I just like plants and animals more and want us to quit clearing land for no good reason.

Well, Nevada had plenty of desert land and China had a bunch of swamp land......this is what Germany has to offer.

Both deserts and swamps are fragile ecosystems too. If Telsa is not doing everything it can to design these buildings to work with the natural environment, it is a waste is all I am saying I guess.

so there's no place on earth?....maybe he will build teslas on mars....

You don't think there is a happy medium? Maybe a spot that was destroyed in humanities industrialization age that is now in decay? He could use his eco stance to show businesses how to build a factory and help clean up our planet at the same time. If that is his actual goal and he is just not full of shit.

It’s bad optics and if you can’t see that then your blinded by your infatuation with all things Elon. And yes I’m sure there are many places that he could utilize that are now surplus and not operational. If the first thing I saw was that a viable forest being decimated to build a factory, well, I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I got out today, I’ll watch from afar for a bit ;). I’m not good at this, my balls aren’t big enough I guess lol.
PS I sold Shopify as well :o
kudos man, it takes a lot of stones for someone to actually know their own appetite for risk/loss and to cash out.

Tesla is doing much more to save our planet than a few acres of trees. Building the factory some place that will only add to the cost of building planet saving cars, and thus would price them out or reach of the masses. They already recycled an old abandoned ICE factory in Fremont Ca. Teslas mission is to convert the world to renewable energy not clean up others mess they left behind.

Don't look now, they are covering up valuable iceflows.....The first Supercharger in Iceland arrived yesterday at the Tesla store/service centre at Krókháls 13 in Reykjavík:

Lets do some math:
According to Wikipedia, the footprint for the factory is 3 km2, which is 300 hectares (about 742 acres).
CarbonNeutral.com estimates 100 - 300 metric tonnes (100,000 -300,000 kg, or 220,462 - 661,387 lbs) of CO2 sequestration per hectare per year.
On the European Environmental Agency website, we learn that the average European car (9.35 km/L or 22 mpg) produces 95 g of CO2 per km on average (this is actually the 2021 target, but I felt that it's appropriate to use considering the built time of the factory. However, it's important to note that the 2020 target is 146 g of CO2 per km, so reaching 96 g a year later seems dubious).
Assuming 18500 km per year (11,500 miles per year), that's 1.76 metric tonnes of CO2 per car per year.
(300 hectares of land * 300 (max) tonnes of CO2 per hectare) / 1.76 tonnes of CO2 per car = 51136 cars per year.
Tesla needs to offset the carbon emissions of just over 51,000 average European ICE cars per year to break even on their carbon. Tesla plans 500,000 EV's per year from the Gigafactory. They're going to offset by a factor of 10.
Granted, this does not include the carbon associated with building the factory or the cars, but an order of magnitude gives a healthy amount of wiggle room...

What does it take to build a car, carbon-wise? I was always curious on that one.

You really are into Tesla. I like them too, but not to the point that I feel the need to protect them from every small criticism.

same as any ICE car....cars don't last forever and they will all need to be replaced one day. I would rather see them replaced with EV rather than more ICE cars. The carbon footprint of EV's is much lower than ICE cars per mile driven.

The electric transmission network is the backbone of the nation's energy grid and consists of more than 600,000 circuit miles of lines, 240,000 of which are considered high-voltage lines (230 Kilovolts and greater).

Solar power at night is only 8000 miles away.

Ok defend all you want, like I said it’s bad optics. You ever been accused of being stubborn lol.
