So heres a quick one for you guys.

The other day i had gone to Nelson Ledges in Nelson township, Garrettsville, N.E. OHIO. Its always a great time and i find alot of great people always there. Kinda an old hippie get together with great tunes:joint:. But i ran in to this old hippie guy who i found out lives a few miles from me. Awesome. Well we got to talking about growing and whatnot and he brought up the idea of regeneration. Keeping you plants around outdoors year round to keep using the same plant over again year after year. Making it stronger and stronger each year with a larger and larger root mass. This idea intrigued me. From what he says he has a 14 year old plant that still grows and flowers each year, better and better every year.

He said the trick to the deal was after your harvest chopping your plant and leaving a bit of stalk "6-8in" in the ground, the proceding to insulate his plant with bails of hay. Then next season he removes them and the plant starts to grow again. This is what he said hes been doing for 14 years with one plant. Im working on gettin a picture, but im skeptical?

Does anyone know if this is myth, or true? The idea sounds amazing, but to good to be true.

Are you sure he was talking about pot and not... say... roses?

Because as far as I was aware, cannabis is an annual plant: sprout, veg, flower, seed, die.

I think he was yanking your chain, my friend.

I'm not sure one can turn an annual into a perennial outdoors. I suppose it's possible, if off-season temps didn't drop below X degrees. Of course, frigid northern temps even sometimes render perennials useless, in that they can only survive so much cold abuse.
Sure seems like something might've gotten to his plant outdoors in 15 years, like bugs, etc.

hmmm no leaves to gather light......covered in hay bales. How would it stay alive? WHY would it stay alive? :peace:

and I guess one could argue that each subsequent season's re-birth should be stronger physically, or would it just be older . . . like an old man arising from a long, winters' nap.
NOT an attractive prospect, IMO.

OK! pot grows and grows and grows it doesn't have to die! check on youtube for certain like grow documentries! they have twenty year old plants in spain! who says their perenials or whatever? as long as they are hardy, they can last forever!

We've regenerated plants, but never outside. We had to leave a few leaves hanging on to continue growth, without them the others croaked pretty fast. I dunno, I'm skeptical, without leaves and being buried i'd think it wouldn't work but i've been proven wrong before.

I regenerated a plant that was an indoor grow, and havest. I left one little bud site on the bottom. story short, It sat in my cellar for about two weeks, and I thought, what the hell, and planted it in my garden, and after about two months it finaly started growing. the leaves we extreamly elongated for quite a while, and it was fricken scrawny. it finaly died a horrible death to the slugs. but yes, it can be done, but why waiste the time, when you can clone?

yes-indoor it can be done with shitty results, but outdoor-the temps are changing all the time, how can it be growing ell all the time???but the thought that the roots grow and grow is facinating.i wonder if its really possible, but really i dont think so cas the outdoor environment is changing.

although intrigued, I find that the old hippy has smoked way to much of his own supply. although..... if this is possible, why can't farmers regenerate their cornfields/beanfields to save millions of dollars on seed. sorry this was interesting reading but I can't buy that, not in the harsh winters that we experience here.

No clue about this being true. But im interested to see pictures or some more info :)
I have a friend who swears the best dope he ever smoked was off a plant a guy kept growing, year after year, in a window. Beats me. In general, I believe that MJ IS an anual, not a perenial. However, IF you keep it from dying in the winter, theoretically, you could keep it alive, maybe forever. Unnatural, but maybe possible.
The thing is, being an annual, it's programmed to grow from a seed, mature in one season, make seeds and drop them--for the next season's grow. It isnt like, say, a Dahlia or iris...meant to grow every summer, die back in the winter and come back again every summer. In orfer to force it to do so, you'd have to make it think winter never came...and it's always summer. So...just mulching with straw sounds pretty unlikely to me. In a green house, with temps always staying about the same, I guess you could keep one believing summer lasts forever. I have a tropical vine called Mandevilla that is supposed to be an annual, but I bring it inside in the Fall and keep it in a warm sunny window all winter. It doesnt bloom, but it does stay alive...and next Spring I put it back outside and it blooms all summer. However, it grows from rhizomes, not seeds...and in the tropics where it "lives", there is no winter.

Wouldn't it sometime in it's lifetime sprout balls from over ripening? That's the only thing I can figure to stop you from keeping one through the winter. I have plenty of "annuals" that survive through the winter in my greenhouse.

Now that I think of it there are a few older Thai varieties that take multiple seasons to ripen, maybe it was one of these? No idea what these varieties are called, every time I see them mentioned, it's from some troll just trying to look smart.

ok, I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, just to satisfy my curiosity, after I cut the plant off, I will insulate the stalk as the old hippy said he did and well let it sit till warm weather returns in 2010 and see if he's burnt out or he really knows his shit. personally, I don't think so, but I have seen stranger shit happen in my life. I'll let you know in about 10 months!

I will do the same indoors under a single ($12) ballist. My "Medicine" is due to harvest in less than two months, so say lets give it 3 weeks to fully recover harvest, then 2.5 months till second harvest. I will let you all know the results of regeneration indoors.

it would rot or something a whole year come on after 14 years so much stress the plant would have to turn hermaphrodite eventually anyway.
