Reel's Sour Diesel Closet Grow

So I got 30 Sour Diesel clones, that just started poking the first roots out so I will consider this day 1. I have the mommies here too, and they are about to go into flowering.

ReelDiesel Day 1 Mommies.jpg

All I did was snip some branches off that weren't going to produce much anyway, with my scissors. I stuck them in some rock wool cubes that were just rinsed not soaked. I didn't know better at the time, but they seem fine.

My cousin had given me this nice dome to work with, but I think he messed it up during transport to my place because it wasn't keeping any moisture in. That little mishap made me lose 4 clones. I was lucky that I caught it right away and didn't lose all 34. So I snagged one of my wife's rubber maid containers, rinsed it out and flipped it upside down. It actually works real good, haven't lost a clone since.

I'll try to keep this updated as much as possible, hoping to get a t least 1 pic a day in. I plan on using 4x 24" fluorescent tubes for vegging and 2x 150W HPS for flowering. I am giving some of the clones to my cousin and I'm only going to keep 8 or so to grow out. For medium I've been using Miracle Grow Organic Choice potting mix, probably not going to add many nutes if any. I plan on growing in either 4x 12" 3gal pots, hoping to flower them at 3' tall or 9x 8" rose pots (they are taller), and forcing them at 2-2 1/2' . I am not sure which would yield more.

Feel free to comment.

hey reelfiles, thanks for the link. my girls are in 3 gal square pots. i've heard the same thing about the gallon of pot per foot of plant but have seen this myth blown away in several other threads. i try to keep my girls about 30" at time of harvest because of height restrictions. i really think you should add some perlite and garden lime to that mg soil.

For what it's worth, I had 4 5-foot plants in 2-gal last year. After harvest, I pulled and examined the rootballs -- they used up the pot space, but weren't anywhere close to root-bound. 3-gal should be more than enough.

Well thanks guys, that makes me feel a lot more confident using the pots I got. I agree with that mix needing some perlite, for sure. How much garden lime should I mix in?

So I made a boo-boo; I meant to test how hot it would get in my room with both HPS lights on. I only meant to test it for 2 hours, but got caught up in the holiday stuff and it turned out to be more like 9 hours :/ Needless to say it was like 90F in there, but nothing died. Hope nothing got messed up from my stupidity. Anyways I got more pics and a shot of my favorite clone sprouting some small roots. i think I'll make her my mother plant.

Cool -- love the clone. Looks nice and healthy. Did you use any rooting horomone on those? I'm going to do some soil layering this year to develop some clones to go outdoors when the weather warms.

Don't sweat your 90-degree episode, no pun intended. I started last year with a 400W in a closet and no ventilation, and it pushed 95 in there regularly. I eventually moved to a better spot, but no harm done in the meantime - my plants turned out great.

The folks whose grows and success I've really come to respect usually promote having a solid temp drop between light on and off. Say, like low-mid 80's with lights on, and high 60's, 70-ish with them off. Makes sense to me; very natural.

Nope, I have never used any rooting hormones. Usually I just stick them in a glass of water that's been sitting out for a few days and throw a clear plastic bag over it. This time I had the rockwool, so I figured I'd give that a shot, seemed to work faster than in the glass. The Clones were taken on the 18th or 19th, so they are ca a week old today.

Wow, it can't get any simpler than that! thx... Good luck with 'em; I'll stay 'scribed.

Yeah I am definitely trying to keep it simple. I am sick of constantly having to mess with unnecessary complications.

Thanks nanskies.

Just small update for today. I didn't have much time today so I just bought some supplies. 60 bucks later I came home with this:

I couldn't get the big bags of dirt at Depot and they didn't have 42W daylight spiral cfl bulbs. I was actually rather disappointed with their selection of pretty much anything I needed. I still have $40 to play with so I am thinking pots and perlite. I couldn't find square pots there either, so I am probably gonna head by Lowes tomorrow and see what they got. It's kinda hard to find supplies in the off-season :/ I don't care for the big light I got. I thought I could disassemble the reflector and use it but it's such a POS that it's not even worth it. I am just gonna return that tomorrow and buy 2 of the same bulbs and bases for them then wire them up myself.

I recommend you look into some supplemental nutes. The potting soil may hold them over for a little while, but eventually they will need the extra boost. Plus it is a generic mix most likely so it may be missing a lot of micro nutrients that these plants need for overall healthy growth. Even a Compost tea would work great to supply beneficial bacteria and fungi as well as a light to medium feeding.

I did buy some MG Bloom Booster, looks like it has a good amount of micro nutes in it. I don't have a hydroponics store near by so I am pretty much limited to what's available at Home Depot or Lowes etc.

I totally understand man, I'm blessed to have a nice hydro store a couple blocks away but that hasn't always been the case. Other than that keep going and good luck, just buy your equipment slowly and eventually you will have a nice healthy growing environment.

BTW I'm subscribed, I'm thinking of getting some Sour D Clones maybe next go around.

just to throw this out in the air, but you can make a compost tea from home if you wanted to go organic and ditch the MG. You can buy all the ingredients at Home Depot and it should do wonders with your organic soil. Things to put in the "Tea" would be: worm castings, bat guano, seabird guano, bagged compost, etc, etc... all these plus more are easy to mix into water in small amounts and feed to your plants. Most also come in a dry for so they are easy to store. Just buy a small bag of compost and use a small amount every time you feed. You can even let it sit for a day or 2 and let the biological process start, than feed.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that for sure.

I am not doing too good with Home Depot, got the wrong lights again. Turns out the 42W 6500K bulbs I picked up don't have an integrated ballast :/ I gotta head out again tomorrow and just get a bunch of lower wattage bulbs or just get 24" fluorescent tubes like I used to use.

At least I managed to get a decent 3-way extension chord and some ElCheapo clamp lights that I might be able to hack up into something useful. Sorry for the lame update, I'll get some better pics up when the lights are installed and the clones transplanted.
