Really!? Trim Up for Big Tops???

What is the real truth. Do you get bigger colas if you trim up a lot and how much if so, of the lower plant?? Thanks. This is a question that no one has really answered with any certainty...

no .. dont trim... but if you feel you must just trim the lower 1/3 of your plant.... trimming causes stress. stress= less yield

I'm running my own little side by side comparison right now. I'm lollipopping half the plants by taking off the bottom third of leaves and branches in the second week of flowering. The other half of the plants are being left alone.

So far trimming looks like the winner. The top buds are bigger and denser and the plant even looks healthier. The untrimmed plants aren't producing anything but pop corn buds on the bottom and there is a lot of dead leaves due to the light not penetrating that low.

The real results will be coming in about 3 weeks when I actually compare weight of plants that are the same size.

Any trimming should be done in the vegatative phase as you want as little stress as possible in the flowering phase. I personally trim the lower 1/4 of my plants to create a nice airflow under the plants and also to shift its attention to the top leaves where i will see my biggest cola's.

Ive never had problems with trimming but i urge people to be cautious. Don't go crazy with trimming and if you can spread it out over a period of a week to minimize stress in your plants. hoped this helped be easy :leaf:

If you are removing leaves you are not lollipopping. You are just being a dick to your plant for no reason. The only leaves that should come off are the ones on the branches.

I've never done side by side comparison, so I look forward to the final results of Philo's test - keep us posted, I'll subscribe to this thread.
But, I have been totally happy with my results (trimming). When I do miss a lower branch in my pruning, I find that what comes of it is hardly worth having around (a bunch of pain in the ass popcorn).
As far as stress goes... I'm sure there is SOME stress, but it doesn't seem to be enough to notice IMO. My plants keep going crazy with new growth immediately. I prune pretty hard. Every time, I get done and think 'what have I done?' - they look a bit butchered. But VERY quickly they fill back in, and look better than ever. I've noticed yield and quality get better as I get better at pruning and anticipating how they're going to grow after the pruning.

Not saying that everyone should do it my way... do what works for you. But I've seen good results.

My post was rather spot on actually. Perhaps the lack on context would lead you to the assumption I was somehow mocking someone? I was simply offering advice based on the majority of the so called lollipopping I've seen on this site.

its simple.. if your doing a sog or any kind of grow where light does not reach the bottom of your plant you should trim it off.. if u dont what happens is the plant diverts energy from the top parts which get light to the bottom half that does not receive light to keep it alive.. kinda like survival mode.. but by doing this the u get popcorn buds when really it should have been energy used up top for yes bigger colas.. trim or lollipop your plants 1/3 to 1/2 way up.. first time 2 weeks before flower. second time 2 weeks into flower

This is not always true. While removing too many leaves or internodal fan leaves will affect the plants ability to photosynthesize, there is evidence that certain stresses will increase both yield as well as potency. I know a guy that has been growing longer than I have been alive. He has run huge commercial houses and if you lived in nor cal within that time, more than likely you have smoked his weed...anyway, he swears by a system he is using now that involves an almost constant stressing of his girls by manipulating the way the light hits them, it involves distance and angle changes, unlike anything I have ever seen. His smoke is also some of the most potent I have sampled and its not some wonder weed, its the basic tried and true AK-47 and white widow.

Sorry, didnt mean to semi thread jack.

i trim, if you trim the 1/3 bottom of the plant barely gets light anyways so it puts the energy into getting bigger colas

good info. never got a solid timeframe on lollipopping. i skipped the trimming in veg stage, but i think i'll lolly em in a couple weeks. won't hurt to have cuttings either.......

Ok so much about trimming the lower 1/3rd but when. I mean one third of a veg plant is not going to be the same plant after the stretch in flower which can, as you know if you grow, last quite some time. So do you finish taking all that was missed after the completion of the stretch?? I aggree don't take any fans only the branches and leaves on the main stalk from the lower areas... I will be doing this next round...
