Question about drying

I will be drying in my basement which stays rather cold. I would say in the low 60's. I was wondering if I should dry the big colas like they are or cut the colas into smaller buds to help it dry quicker. The humidity is low. I usually break the cola apart during the curing process but I was wondering if there is any advantage breaking it down for drying?

I'm in the same situation, so I'm bumping...

@OP: My experience is that hanging individual buds is bad, they will dry too fast and lock in that nasty clorofyll. Apart from mold-fear, I see no reason to break it up.
So I hang my plants whole, for drying as slow as possible.
Only my very biggest colas hang alone.

I'm drying in cold conditions, about 15 degrees celcius (60 F), RH is 45%.

It's been 3 days, and it's still almost as wet as day 1.
So very cold = very slow drying. Which is Very Good (everybody agrees with longer the better, right?).

So what is the drawback? How cold is too cold? And why?

Will the cold temps make mold even at 40-50% RH?

I think it depends on how dense your buds are. If they're light and airy don't worry about it. If they're dense and heavy, it cant hurt to break them up. Or hang them upside right so the moisture doesn't collect in the thickest part of the bud. I had an indica with very dense buds and the inside of the buds started to rot.

I guess my final answer is it can't hurt to break it up, but it can hurt if you don't. Good luck!
