Quality vs. Quantity

hey guys. Forgive me if I'm wrong as im still fairly new to all of this. My first grow was a THC Bomb from ms.nl. Awesome plant. Now I made a few mistakes and observations from the grow!

I noticed that when I swapped to 12/12, my plant didn't stretch!

I think it could be due to me having removed all my fan leaves just after I swapped the lights?

Does that mean that fan leaves directly control the overall size of the plant? And that the branch leaves control bud development?

And if that is so, could we then use this to speed up vegetative growth by only defoliating low branches?

Could we control when we stop the plant from stretching by removing fan leaves and give the plant no option other than to put all its energy into developing its flowers?

Just some food for thought.

Please comment anything relevant or wether you have had similar experiences whilst growing!

No....

If it didnt stretch it was just a strain/pheno that didnt have much stretch. Sometimes it happens like that.
Definitely not because of removing fan leaves.

In fact my best friend was having crazy stretch when he was cutting off his leaves and thought it was because he cut off the leaves. Ended up being his light bulb was way too old and lost most of its lumens. Once he changed out the bulb his plants stopped stretching somuch.

Lol.
Yea thats exactly what you should do.

Lemme just say, odds are your not gonna have some profound revelation or insight after growing one plant, or while growing your first.

Now keep your quality AND yield and quit removing leaves

Fuck guys. No need to go on a war path! Haha.. That's why I was asking! Lol.. But even though I may have asked what seemed to me like a logical question, and to you like a stupid one! I have learned a little more! Haha.. Thanks peeps!

Welcome to RIU.. Don't take it personal but u unkowningly asked a sensitive question.. Fan leaves are like solar panels and that's how your plant absorbs energy.. Good luck.. I thought u were a new member but welcome anyway..lol

Bottom line :
  1. fan leaves are important. ( leave them )
  2. Pheno genetics determine plant characteristics.
  3. THC BOMB IS AN AUTO. ( it will stay short )
  4. Autos DONT NEED LIGHT CHANGES - Run cycle (18/6 seed to harvest )
  5. Stressing autos will affect plant - transplanting , defoliating leaves , Overfeeding , poor lighting . These are grown differently from regular photo strains. They have an extremely short life and tend to be very compact in size and yield.

Leaves act as photoreceptors, as you probably already know. What you may not count on is that the nutrients in those leaves act as energy storage that the plant may depend upon later. The best plants I have grown so far have only been stripped of the under belly, or below the canopy penetration point leaving all fan leaves in tact. Cutting them in half hamburger style signals the plant to focus its efforts towards new root growth. To stop too much stretching, I like to cut the leaves up until the flower switch. The night before, I really let them have it and the plant seems to focus on thickening up rather than stretching out. Signs of stretching could include high temps, low lumens, lack of air circulation and uneven apical dominance. The leaves do not act locally as you may think, rather more like a school of fish, the more, the merrier. The only way to speed up the VEG process is to strengthen the grow chain. WATER, LIGHT, NUTRIENTS, C02, AND OXYGEN TO THE ROOTS. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

I've grown thc bomb -- it was not an auto -- and they stayed very short. And as far as defoliation I lean hard toward not removing leaves but I've seen some very experienced growers do it successfully with certain strains.......key words there, experienced growers.

And oh ya, what does any of this have to do with "Quality vs. Quantity"?

This was my THC Bomb (photoperiod- not auto) I ran 7 weeks veg at 18/6 and there were no signs of pre flower. I am running a ww auto atm and it's week 5 of 18/6 and flowering already. So it was defs not an auto.

Yielded 3.8 oz dry

All the fan leaves were removed one week after I switched to 12/12. Plant was topped 3 times and lst'd using wire pins into the soil not a screen.

When I chopped it the pot was root bound completely. So I've doubled pot size for the grow I'm on atm. I also over watered the plant (so low oxygen to the roots)

thanks for the info on the chain man. I haven't heard of that before! But I'm pretty sure the only one that I didn't supply enough of was oxygen to the roots!

Defoliating is like flushing.

Its debated and beaten to death, probly a hundred threads on it.

I suppose the issue is, defoliating like flushing can in some instances be beneficial. And almost nobody actually looks into the science behind, those that do usually dont understand it

I see! Sorry then peeps! Haha.. I couldn't find one that debated the possibility that certain methods of defoliation may affect the plants grow in different ways. Haha..

There is THC bomb photos. I've grown them, they stretch.

And I agree. Don't cut leaves.
