Putting hydroton on top of soil? Will it help?

Im not worried so much about areation. I use super soil and biobizz light (in place of roots) and now Worms way is going to quit selling bio bizz! It sucks. Im trying humbolt nutrients organic soil fir half the grow this time round to see if that could be a replacement for the biobizz.
Back to topic,
you know how it is after a while of watering your plants it seems like the water goes into the soil around the same spots everytime so I thought a couple of inches of hydroton might spread the water out more.
What do you all think?

Water crystals would do what your asking, but you'd want to amend it evenly into the soil, not use it as a mulch.
