Yeah here in the south it's pretty common to say hydro-ton instead of the proper hydra-tin, but every time I talk from someone non-southern they react funny to the way I say it lol..

Funny.. just yesterday a guy came into the local grow shop when I was getting some inserts and asked for the "brown marble things" lol.. love MMJ and the people who think they can just buy and grow that simple.

English words are usually pronounced with emphasis on the second to last syllable*. Therefore, hyDRAWton is your best bet. However, the english language is pretty contradictory, so I'm not holding fast to this hypothesis. For the record, I say hyDRAWton. ;)

*for example: mariJUAna, KEYboard, philoDENdron, fanTAStic, athLETic, superkalifragilisticexpialaDOcious, etc.

Ask any Horticulture expert and he'll say hydra-tin every time.

Ask us Texans and we'll tell you hydro-ton. It's just a cultural/vernacular issue.

This is freaking hilarious. I started growing in the South however I ordered everything that I grew is online so I had no idea how to pronounce it I always pronounced it Hydro ton. But that was just from reading it on the bags the first time I heard it said as hidroten the proper way I was blown away and had to look it up I've been going in the north for a couple years now and have never had to purchase it however at a grow store.
I'm a northern boy anyway I'm from Detroit and that's where I live now but how crazy that I could go through 40 years of my life and never know how to pronounce the word hydroton;)

Hello all,
I know I am late to this party but...anyway...

I just saw a video where a guy called it Hy-drot-in and I thought I would start a thread but I did a search and found this one.

For years I have been calling it Hydro-ton or Hydro-tin or something that sounds like hydro-tawn, but not so drawn out.
Anyway...
When I buy it, I have always asked for Hydro-ton and the hydro guy says "ok" and he goes in the back and comes out with the huge bag...No comment, no correction, no snicker... Nothing...
And this is at the three hydro stores just in my zipcode.
We have way too many hydro stores in my area in my opinion and I don't even live in a city that is that big...

So, if Hydroton is pronounced Hy-drot-in, have I been pronouncing hydroponics wrong all these years?
Is it really Hy-dropo-nics?
Cause I pronounce it Hydro-pon-ics...

This reminds me of the whole Seinfeld Demi / De-me Moore thing (the secretary episode).
Where George says "De-me?, I thought it Demi?"
Jerry: No. I think it's De-me.
George: Really? I never heard of a se-me tractor-trailer.

Anyway, it's funny how we can all say the same word so differently.
