Probably nitrogen deficiency, but want to double-check.

Hi,

Total newbie here, and I know there must be a ton of questions similar to mine, and I did do some searching that leads me to believe that my plant is suffering from nitrogen deficiency, but I still wanted to post a couple of pics and double-check with some experience growers.

Info:
  • Location: inside
  • Lighting: 240W G8 LED; 20hr on, 4 hr off
  • Grow medium: Coir + a bit of vermiculite
  • Stage: growth (only 3 or 4 weeks old)
  • Watering schedule: every day (I read in several places to do this, since growing in coir is almost the same as hydro)

The older leaves are slowly turning yellow while the new growth comes in pretty green. Sounds like a nitrogen deficiency, but I can't tell if the veins are green enough to imply iron or manganese might be the problem instead. Here are a couple of pics, please let me know if more are needed. As you can see all of the other plants in there are doing really well, and a couple of them are even in coir, so I'm a bit puzzled.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Sure does look like N deficiency to me, are they all the same strain?
Hey DeeTee,

It's just the one plant in there (I was told the strain is 'Rainier') - the others are mostly tomato plants. Didn't want to take on more than one plant on my first attempt. I'll get some N for it ASAP. I'm using a 3-1-3 hydro-specific nutrient - any tips on what I should supplement with?

Not sure, is that a one part nute? I'm hydro myself ( rockwool grow cubes ) but use GH 3 part flora series micro, grow, and bloom nutes and have good success with it, I'm sure someone will chime in with better advise, bare in mind that with hydro you must keep track of your ph and ppm's, you should have a ph meter and tds meter.

Ditch the hydro nutes unless you're going hydro after this. I'm a n00b but I use MG Houseplant food at first and then mix with MG Cactus nutes for flower....

Yeah, it's an all-in-one: Advanced Nutrients Iguana Juice Grow. It says it's designed for hydro, and perhaps that implies that the roots should come in contact with fresh solution constantly and watering just once a day is not getting enough nuts to them?

The pH is about 6 (I just have some test paper), which from what I understand is within the 'good' range. Can anyone recommend a good, cheap digital pH meter, preferably carried by Amazon? I'll have to go read up on PPM and what a TDS meter is... :-)

Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if I've made the mistake of choosing a hydro medium but watering more as if it were soil. My container is way too big to water until runoff every day, maybe I've got to transfer it to a 5 gal. bucket with good drainage and fully water it every day to get this to work. Or maybe I should tuck my tail between my legs and go back to soil -- might not be too late for this guy if I transfer it again. I just really like the fact that insect infestations are way less likely with hydro grow mediums...

I'm going to avoid MG because I'd like to use mostly plant-based organic nutrients, but I'm sure there's something out there I can use.

nitrogen deficiency. Magnesium Deficiency the light green is on the inside and nitrogen if it fades from outside..
Thanks for confirmation. I actually just realized that I may be able to use some of my chickens' poo mixed w/ water to make a high-nitrogen additive - just not sure if that's a good idea for inside growing. Any opinions?

Hey, just a quick note to say thanks and give you a quick update. The problem was definitely nitrogen, and she's really humming along after adding some Alaska Fish Fertilizer to the mix. Going to switch to 12/12 on Sunday after I can move the rest of the plants out of the tent. Here are a couple of pics to show you the great recovery (and my scrog setup)!

Quick question: is it possible to have too many budding sites (nodes?) in a ScrOG? I have a whole bunch and wanted to ask if I should trim it to allow it to direct its energy to fewer nodes. Thanks!
